Starting from the Planetary Governor - Chapter 974
Chapter 965, Taking Office
Office. When Shang Yanwen awoke, he could already see out the shuttle window the distorted skyline of Comoros, sliced into fragments by towering spires.
A century ago, as a poor boy living in the lower levels of the Koroja Hive, he never imagined his academic proficiency would earn him admission to the Alliance’s premier university of grammar and law, and upon graduation, enter the Alliance’s government system.
He certainly couldn’t have imagined that he would one day set foot in this dark city, once the bane of the universe, as one of its administrators.
Rubbing his eyes, Shang Yanwen asked, “How long will it take us to arrive?”
“Supervisor Shang, we’ll land in five minutes and transfer to the government building. Governor Xia Xingze is already waiting,” the female flight attendant’s voice echoed from the cabin.
Shang Yanwen peered out the window at the twisted buildings, and thought of his home.
Back then, when the Alliance army entered the lower levels of the Comoros Hive, he’d hidden in a rusty ventilation duct, watching pairs of shiny military boots plunge into the cesspool.
The hot porridge provided at the recruitment station changed the course of his life, and the acceptance letter from the University of Grammar and Law became his ladder out of the slums.
And now, he would change this dark city.
On the outside, he appeared to be a scholarly civil servant, elegant and easygoing. But the wrinkles at the corners of his eyes revealed a century of accumulated political experience. He had risen from the bottom, and beneath his refined exterior lay a ruthless spirit.
This was especially evident in recent decades, after he ascended to a leading position.
He had led seventeen years of tax reform in the Peperos system, whose ever-increasing tax burdens had wrought countless blood and tears on the local elite.
During his twelve years coordinating colonization in the Mayags system, he had ruthlessly dismantled all the civilian communities on worlds that had previously rebelled, forcing countless families to never see each other again. This, in turn, significantly reduced the likelihood of rebellion and enabled them to efficiently explore new worlds.
For the past nineteen years, during the Dark Side Crusade in the Mailiang system, he had served with a detachment of the Angelic Fleet Battle Group, leading Alliance officials and collaborating with the military to resettle two hundred worlds through a combination of suppression and appeasement.
Now, these credentials bear a new nameplate on his chest: Third Supervisor of the Comoros Special Administrative Region Government. This position, in essence, places him in charge of the resettlement of the Eldar population and property.
Five minutes passed before the airship touched down on the landing platform.
As soon as the hatch opened, Shang Yanwen was struck by the scent of blood.
It emanated from a four-man Space Marine squadron in front of him. They had been waiting there for a long time.
The leader stepped forward and held out a data tablet.
Shang Yanwen raised his hand to verify his biometric information. A cold voice echoed through the other person’s breathing grid:
“Hello, Inspector Shang Yanwen. I’m Vikas, from the 6th Company of the Angels of Execution. My team and I will be protecting you for the next period of time.”
This was Shang Yanwen’s first time being closely guarded by four Space Marines.
He had seen these majestic warriors before, but they were often the sharpest blades on the battlefield, tasked with solving the most daunting problems. They were excellent offensive weapons, rarely used as bodyguards for high-ranking government officials.
Since something like this had occurred, it likely meant that the safety of these high-ranking government officials was one of Comoros’ most pressing issues.
However, he had been prepared for this.
While his past experiences had included personal danger in the face of blood and blood, he knew Comoros well. He had read extensively and understood that working there would be the closest he would ever come to facing death.
“I’m counting on you,” Shang Yanwen replied politely.
He knew about the Angels of Execution.
Most of the Blood Angels’ offshoots within the Alliance were established after the Battle of Celestia and the Blood Angels’ accession to the Alliance.
This concentrated formation is known as the Blood Alliance Founding.
However, a few Chapters joined the Alliance during its Dark Side Crusades, even before the parent Chapter joined the Alliance. Others were established during smaller Dark Side Foundings prior to the Blood Alliance’s founding.
The Angels of Execution fall into this latter category.
Their role has always been unique: as two internal security Chapters, they rarely venture out into battle, yet their culpability is no small, often responding to calls from the Alliance’s Independent Commission Against Corruption, Police, Security, and Internal Affairs Departments to address serious internal affairs.
The name “Angels of Execution” isn’t given in vain. When they strike, it’s often when there’s irrefutable evidence, or even no evidence needed; the only real need is a death sentence. Furthermore, these are only when the Alliance’s Internal Affairs Department, even with its own elite agents, is unable to resolve the situation, forcing the use of the Angels.
The Angels of Execution are first-rate at suppressing internal riots and quelling explosions.
And now, this chapter has arrived in Comoros at full strength.
The current Comoros Special District is ripe for them to make a difference.
…
He switched to a vehicle and sped through the city’s enclosed passageways. He took in the surrounding scenery.
The avenue he was on was once known as the Avenue of Pain and Desire, the central street of Comoros.
After the spaceship landed, the path leading from here led directly into the heart of Comoros. There, the Hall of Suffering, where the Dark Sorcerer King Victor once sat, served as the ruling center of the Dark Eldar. Now, it’s the seat of the Comoros Special District government, its name long since changed to simply Comoros Central City.
This avenue evokes a hint of its former prosperity. Tall buildings and spires lined both sides, along with numerous signs that hadn’t been removed, symbolizing the prestige of the various dark families. These families often spent vast sums of money to purchase towers around the Avenue of Pain, using them as signage. Major guilds and businesses also operated shops here, trading in rare treasures plundered from the real universe. Numerous neon-lit sanctuaries of indulgence, reveling in the glitz and glare of luxury, were also found.
However, it was now quite deserted. Not only were the streets deserted, but even bloodstains, unwashed, could be seen.
Shang Yanwen’s armored hovercraft sped off the ground along the avenue, encountering no threats as it reached Central City and the Governor’s Mansion.
The Governor’s Mansion was renovated from the former Temple of Pain. Human engineers had removed the screaming statues and obliterated any religious and sensual symbols, but its opulence and cunning were still palpable.
As soon as he entered, Shang Yanwen saw four witch spirits wearing electronic collars scrubbing the floor. Dark purple blood was oozing from the cracks in the tiles. They had to use their tiny psychic powers to suppress and remove the painful supernatural energy that once permeated the place.
The dark elves like these, but humans don’t.
Shang Yanwen’s leather boots stepped on water marks. The elf woman retracted her hand as if she had been electrocuted. The blue light on her collar suddenly increased, and she convulsed and pressed her forehead against the ground.
He walked past without changing his expression, took the express elevator, moved inside the building, and soon arrived at the Governor’s office.
Four execution angels were guarding the door. Shang Yanwen went in alone and met the Governor of Comoros – Xia Xingze.
The two talked in secret for a while, and Shang Yanwen came out soon.
However, his expression was a little more solemn.
