Starting from the Planetary Governor - Chapter 936
Chapter 928, Airstrike
airstrike against the human air force was quite effective.
They had three objectives for this sortie, all of which they accomplished remarkably well.
The first was to secure air superiority. While not entirely secure, trying to prevent those Abyssal Dragons and demon-engine-powered aircraft from even taking flight while under interception by enemy ground-based anti-aircraft fire was a bit of a stretch.
However, sufficient air superiority was sufficient.
The core objective was to achieve a certain degree of control over the skies before completing the following two objectives.
The second objective was bombing, using ground attacks to relieve pressure on the human defenders on the ground.
This mission was also accomplished well.
However, the Alliance air force did not directly bomb the Chaos forces attacking the human defenses.
Honestly, those Chaos forces were not the ones posing the greatest pressure on the Alliance defenses.
The greatest pressure came from the constant attacks and the relentless Chaos artillery fire from behind.
The air force focused its efforts on these two areas.
The former represents the starting point for the Chaos forces’ offensive positions, located further back.
In war, troops aren’t simply thrown onto the front lines. Insufficient offensive breadth and overly densely packed positions not only significantly limit offensive efficiency but also render them vulnerable. A single shell strike is a ranged attack, killing anyone standing within. Crowding offers no advantage.
However, the offensive intensity must be maintained to keep pressure on the human forces. This requires reserve forces, which are deployed immediately after the front lines withdraw. This allows troops with significant ammunition and personnel losses to rest and regroup, while simultaneously maintaining the pressure on the front lines with fresh, fully-strength troops. The human side, with fewer troops, lacks the same opportunity for rest, and the pressure only intensifies until the balance is completely broken, unable to withstand the pressure and collapsing, leading to the collapse of the defensive line.
As these positions are destroyed one by one, the entire defensive line collapses.
The air force is currently targeting these reserve forces.
Just as a Chaos reserve force was about to go up for support and replacement, the bombing arrived.
Machine gun fire was one aspect, and while it posed a significant threat, a high-caliber machine gun could pierce even a Space Marine’s power armor; a single hit on a regular human would be a complete annihilation. Even a tank, after two rounds of machine gun fire, would be riddled with bullet holes, rendering it immobile…
Even greater power came from the ground-to-ground missiles launched from larger fighters like the Qilin and even the Dragon Elephant.
A single Scalpel missile, if delivered correctly, could destroy a Titan; a Sky-Splitting Axe missile could wipe out an entire armored company if it got too close and didn’t deploy a dispersed formation; and a single Dongfeng Fen…
only a handful of Dragon Elephant fighters were equipped with such weapons. The Dongfeng Fen missile was so massive that even the largest Dragon Elephant fighter capable of operating within the atmosphere would be unable to carry anything else, essentially depleting its combat power.
But it was worth it.
A single Dongfeng Fen missile could wipe out an entire Chaos launch position.
So far, only one Dongfeng Fen missile had been dropped on the Chaos attack position, saving five previously vulnerable positions, destroying three Titans, and killing over seventy Chaos Space Marines, along with countless other Chaos troops.
The other two Dongfeng Fen missiles struck another significant threat to the Alliance’s defenses: the Chaos artillery positions.
Artillery is the king of war, and even today, this statement remains true.
Put bluntly, war is about effectively inflicting slaughter on the enemy. Orbital bombardment using naval guns would be the best option. In the absence of such capabilities, artillery remains irreplaceable when it comes to ground forces.
Artillery is the most universal, cheapest, most scalable, and most sustainable means of attack.
The most challenging aspect for the human defenders is the constant bombing of their heads.
While the human side possesses artillery, its numbers are vastly inferior to those of the enemy, making counterattack difficult and providing insufficient support to the front lines. Even so, being able to call in a round of artillery to cover the attacking enemy is enough to provide a respite.
And now, two Dongfeng Fen rounds have nearly destroyed two of the most important Chaos artillery positions.
Chaos’ firepower has been drastically reduced!
Almost all artillery positions have ceased fire.
It’s not that they were all bombed. The destroyed artillery accounts for less than half of the Chaos artillery. After all, the Chaos forces wouldn’t be so foolish as to concentrate all their artillery for convenience’s sake. However, they were also apprehensive about whether the Alliance fighters had yet to fire the Dongfeng Fen.
Even if not, a few more Sky-Splitting Axes would be terrifying.
Artillery positions began to evacuate urgently, rebuilding more numerous, more dispersed, and smaller positions to minimize damage from airstrikes.
Zakaria was furious.
“You forced me to do this!”
The enraged White Wolf King issued orders to his fleet.
Initially, he had been concerned about the potential impact of orbital bombardment of the ground by naval artillery on the ‘thing’ beneath the church. But now, since the humans had already done so, he was determined not to show any mercy. He
still didn’t dare to bombard the church directly or the core areas surrounding it; if it were destroyed, it would be disastrous. However, with careful calculations, a relatively small naval artillery bombardment of the surrounding outlying positions was feasible.
However, the human defenses for these outlying positions weren’t particularly significant, typically consisting of a small position, a small hill, and a company of ordinary soldiers. While a single or a few rounds of naval artillery fire could help the Chaos warriors quickly capture the positions, their impact on completely destroying the human defenses was relatively limited.
Zakaria had to concede that ending the battle would require ground forces.
He took a deep breath and urged himself to be patient.
The situation was under control, and they were gradually chipping away at the human defenses. Those minions of the false emperor wouldn’t hold out for much longer.
As he pondered this, he suddenly heard the sound of gunfire not far away.
Exiting the command room, he saw several human fighters swirling down from the sky—shot down.
An equal number of other human fighters were circling and firing downwards,
seemingly covering some targets.
Squinting his eyes, Zakaria realized someone was approaching him.
