Starting from the Planetary Governor - Chapter 930
Chapter 922, Lawbreakers
There were objective reasons why Martins of the Lawbreakers was unable to bring sufficient troops.
The Scourge Fleet was enormous, and numerous Human warships were still en route for reinforcements. It would take at least several days for them to arrive. Until then, the Human fleet wasn’t strong enough to compete with the Scourge Fleet for the remaining orbital space on the planet.
The church was naturally located below the orbital space controlled by the Scourge Fleet, on the other side of the Human fleet.
This was perfectly natural.
If their target was the coffins in the crypt beneath the church, they would naturally choose to occupy a specific area of Papalil’s orbital space when occupying it. However, humanity had previously been unaware of their target and hadn’t contested it, and now there was no chance of a contest.
Chaos forces could easily reinforce their forces on the ground; they could simply airdrop.
Martins’s arrival was fraught with difficulty.
He couldn’t airdrop his troops directly into the combat zone, so he had to land on the other side of the planet. Then, he would board fighters and transport planes, flying across almost half the planet to reach this side.
This would take quite a while.
Furthermore, large landing transports are impractical. Their penetration capabilities are limited, let alone long-distance flights through a planet’s atmosphere. They’re vulnerable to anti-aircraft fire from the Chaos rebels, who already control over 85% of the planet’s surface. Furthermore, due to their large size, they’re also directly threatened by Chaos warships in orbit.
Losing a single ship means at least an entire division is lost—a disastrous loss.
At best, they can only utilize large transport aircraft,
which can accommodate roughly a light infantry battalion.
More conventional aircraft, such as the Wind Falcon, Qilin, and Dragon Elephant, are available.
While maintaining basic combat effectiveness, these aircraft can carry approximately six, twenty, and sixty men, respectively. A Dragon Elephant can fit a tank, but once you’ve added the tank crew, there’s no room for more.
This still requires sacrificing some weaponry, reducing ammunition loadouts, and eliminating missiles, severely impacting the aircraft’s combat capabilities.
Under these circumstances, the number of warriors capable of accompanying Martins to the battlefield was bound to be limited.
And to achieve an impact on the battlefield, they naturally needed to be elite.
In addition to an airborne brigade, a full thousand Space Marines also arrived!
Five companies of Phoenixes, and another five from several different Chapters—including two companies of Banyan Lizards and twenty of his bodyguards, the Feathered Guards.
Over a thousand Space Marines were the core of the battle force.
Furthermore, the airborne brigade was no slouch either. Almost all of them were elite members of the Army, well-equipped and well-trained.
Furthermore, to combat Chaos enemies, they also included a special psychic unit—the Spellbreakers.
This was a corps established under the Order of Psionic Power.
Speaking of the Psychic Order, after Gu Hang assumed the role of Grand Master, a vigorous reform began. The Psychic Order, at least within the Alliance, is no longer the sideshow it once was. Besides the Order’s main responsibility for registering and managing psychics, the psychic academies established across the region are now essentially under the Order’s management.
The Order has also taken on the responsibility of dispatching psychic experts from all walks of life. Whether psychic power is used for military or civilian purposes, they will record and manage it.
This has significantly alleviated the Psychic Order’s previous lack of attention and power. While the Order may not ultimately achieve its original mandate of “controlling all psychic matters,” the clear jurisdiction left after that unrealistic assumption has been discarded is far more important. This includes
the registration, management, and research of psychic power.
Civilian applications include collaborating with authorities to liaise with experts for psychic crime investigations, and certain industrial operations requiring psychic energy to enhance efficiency.
Military applications also fall under this umbrella, with direct involvement in the development of two psychic forces.
The Storm Mage Corps, needless to say, didn’t require the establishment of the Psionic Order; it was already established long ago by Gu Hang. Furthermore, rather than the Psionic Order now managing the Storm Mage Corps, it’s more accurate to say that the Storm Mage Corps has been reincarnated into the Psionic Order. Currently, many positions within the various levels of the Psionic Order on the Alliance side are held by the Archmages of the Storm Mage Corps. Many qualified psykers from the old Psionic Order have been absorbed into the Storm Mage Corps, either teaching at the Psionic Academy or employed by civilian agencies, then registered with the Psionic Order.
As for the other unit, there’s the “Spellbreaker Corps” that has recently arrived with Martins.
As the name suggests, this is a military unit dedicated to countering psykers and the Warp.
They’ve actually been in existence for many years. Its history stretches back at least a hundred years—before the Dark Side Crusade began, and even before the Scarlet Scars appeared.
However, the construction of this unit was quite challenging, and it remained largely experimental. Anti-psychic and anti-Warp units require a unique talent.
If psykers are, in essence, gifted individuals with a keen sense of the Warp, channeling its power through their own “funnel” into the real universe, where they can manipulate it and transform it into psychic energy,
then there are also those who are completely impervious. These impervious individuals are completely insulated from the Warp. Not only are they themselves unaffected by psychic energy, they even spread this insulation outward, effectively suppressing Warp connections across an entire region.
What does this mean?
Within their area of influence, psykers are not only unable to cast spells, but Warp demons can even be expelled from the real universe!
This is an extremely powerful unit.
Unfortunately, their numbers are even fewer than those of the most gifted psykers.
To date, the Alliance has only found fewer than a thousand impervious individuals.
If they are truly unsuccessful, they will have to resort to second-best options.
They weren’t quite ‘leakproof,’ but at least they were ‘insensitive’ to psychic energy, so they were barely useful.
These people, after undergoing professional military training and training in counter-psychic techniques, together formed the Lawbreaker Corps.
And now, the Lawbreaker Corps, composed of ten insensitives and six hundred insensitives brought by Martins, was his other killer weapon.
