Starting from the Planetary Governor - Chapter 916
Chapter 908: The Secret Behind Gene Seeds
The Blood Angels still face a challenge: the curse within their gene-seed.
Gu Hang hasn’t studied genetic biology much, but this area of technology is merely a physical foundation for Space Marines, not a defining factor.
Simple genetic modification alone wouldn’t create a Space Marine. The Alliance’s Bio-Gene Research Institute has conducted relevant research and even created some genetic weapons. For example, they’ve created genetically modified horses modeled after the Death Legion’s shock troopers. These are quite useful. In certain environments, even transport vehicles thoroughly modified for off-roading wouldn’t be able to fit in, but these modified warhorses can. They possess exceptional load-bearing capacity and optimized digestion, requiring minimal food intake and rapidly replenishing stamina, making them suitable for many types of pack transport in harsh environments.
When necessary, specialized cavalry units are also available for desperate assaults. These require the bravest of soldiers to charge with spears in hand, braving a hail of bullets. Often, their most crucial weapon is a lance tipped with a magnetic charge. The charging cavalry, carried at high speed by their steeds, quickly approaches a high-value target. A single thrust of the lance essentially unleashes the magnetic charge with maximum speed and precision, ensuring a successful hit.
These targets are often tanks, bunkers, Titans, mechas, and the like.
Cavalry tactics rely most on the timing of the attack. Their positioning must be sound, and their attacks sudden and effective for tactical effectiveness. And in charging under hail of bullets, their only reliance, besides their own courage and the Emperor’s blessing, is their steed—a genetically modified beast with immense short-range burst speed and incredible agility. Their stamina is immense, and unless they suffer a complete leg loss or a fatal head injury, even a simple injury cannot stop their charge.
In fact, in a crucial battle during the previous reinforcement battle against the Blood Angels, cavalry had demonstrated considerable effectiveness. Under the cover of the tanks, they suddenly charged forward with an unexpected and accelerated speed, crushing and destroying three of the most important Zerg Titans and several large Hive strategic units in a Zerg counterattack.
Although the cavalry regiment suffered near-total destruction, with no survivors, their achievements far exceeded their military value, making it a perfectly acceptable exchange.
This was all thanks to the effectiveness of the Gene-Warhorse, demonstrating the true power of the Alliance genetic laboratories that developed them.
Beyond Gene-Warhorses, they have also developed other biological weapons, genetic modification, and human modification. However, due to ethical considerations, the Alliance has not adopted these technologies on a large scale. Their
primary application has been in productivity development, such as animal husbandry and agriculture. The widespread use of genetic modification has clearly shown the potential to increase yield and quality.
However, the Alliance genetic laboratories were completely helpless with the Space Marine seeds.
Without the Primaris’ modification technology, the Alliance had no means of improving their gene-seeds. Even the most basic restoration of the effects of inferior seeds was beyond their reach.
This situation piqued Gu Hang’s interest.
He participated in some research.
He didn’t study biological genes much,
but he knew a lot about the Warp.
With the help and disassembly of genetic engineers, Gu Hang was able to understand the core of the gene seed from a very microscopic level – this thing actually contains a trace amount of Warp essence!
Space Marines have a close relationship with the Warp.
This is something that Gu Hang finds quite interesting.
When the Emperor “created” Space Marines and “brought forth” the Son of God, it seems that the methods he used were a bit special.
The “talents”, “genetic diseases”, and “characteristics” commonly found in the gene seeds of various chapters all originated from this.
The Blood Angels have blood thirst and black rage. The former makes them crave blood in passion, while the latter causes them to fall into a mad rage and completely lose their minds.
But these two symptoms also endow the Blood Angels with immense combat power. Among their peers, the Blood Angels are practically the ultimate Berserkers. Even a Chapter like the Blood Sharks, renowned for their ruthless melee assaults, still lags behind the Blood Angels. And when the Blood Angels descend into a rage, their combat power soars.
Take the Phoenix Chapter, for example, their pursuit of perfection and exceptional swordsmanship; the Infinite Warriors, calm and rational, strategic, and balanced; the Angels of Death, ruthless and well-rounded, persevering, and adept at plotting and forming cliques; the Saints, while not exceptional in terms of strength, are all religious zealots with a strong resistance to Warp intrusion; the Punishers excel at frontal assaults and group warfare…
These differences stem from the subtle differences in the Warp’s nature inherited from their gene-seed, resulting in a certain convergence in personality and talents among all Space Marines implanted with the same gene-seed—of course, this is a convergence across the entire sample; individual differences are another matter.
Even the Infinite Warriors have their share of reckless individuals, and even the Blood Angels have their share of wise ones.
Despite the minute amount of Warp essence contained within each Space Marine’s gene-seed, Gu Hang immediately lost interest in further research.
Understanding its nature had given him the ability to tamper with the gene-seed.
Whether it was strengthening the seed or removing the Blood Angels’ genetic disease, he could do it.
But it was pointless,
as it would consume his own Warp essence. Modifying a few wouldn’t make much sense. Modifying everything would be too much for Gu Hang.
However, this wave of research sparked a renewed interest in the significance of the minute amount of Warp essence present in gene-seed.
He didn’t want to modify the seed, but he wondered how the Emperor had created the Sons of God.
It was truly fascinating.
According to mythology, the Emperor first used himself as a template to create the numerous Sons of God. Then, using the Sons as a template, he forged Space Marines based on them. Hence the terms Gene Father and Gene Son.
It would be difficult for Gu Hang to create a Son of God out of thin air—his biological son didn’t count, but only a biological and ethical son.
However, he could try to reverse engineer the gene seed.
Now that he had the seed, he could try to reverse engineer it. Would it be possible?
He thought of the independent seeds in the Legion interface, such as the Phoenix Seed and the Blood Shark Seed, which had undergone some changes from the original seeds.
This was a good topic.
