Starting from the Planetary Governor - Chapter 574
Chapter 572, Killing the Bishop
The enemy was elite and numerous, with reinforcements constantly arriving. It was unrealistic to kill every enemy guarding the gate before attempting to enter the protozoan chamber.
Martins decided to lead his most elite squad directly into the chamber while his battle brothers engaged the enemy. It
wasn’t that no one noticed their movement,
but with so many Space Marines charging into the enemy ranks, few could intervene.
Furthermore, the squad Martins led was formidable.
Not only was he there, but also the Chapter’s Librarian, Larsen, and Chief Chaplain, Rizzo.
Furthermore, the rest of the squad was at the level of a company champion.
When they charged, they were truly unstoppable.
With a flurry of phase swords, any who stood in their way were slain.
Only when two Colossi stood in their way did the situation begin to calm down.
On their own, they were nothing. The hammers they wielded seemed as slow as a snail to the Space Marines’ top masters; their massive shields couldn’t stop their swords; their thick armor would be easily sliced through.
Previously, there had been Colossi that had attempted to block their path, but Martins had dispatched them personally.
However, at that moment, a beam of orange-red light shot out from behind the two Colossi.
A company champion was caught off guard and struck.
The shield generator instantly overloaded, and a hole melted through the Iron Terminator’s thick shoulder armor, crippling the Phoenix’s arm.
The power of this single shot would have made even Martins shudder.
But this was only the beginning.
A barrage of bullets blazed from behind. Not every single shot was incredibly powerful, but the barrage, accurate and numerous enough, still attempted to slow the Space Marines’ advance.
Through the barrage, Martins saw a massive, unfurling form. He was draped in the iconic red and black robes of the Alfonzo Cult, a style reminiscent of a Grand Bishop.
This rank was already considered high-ranking within the Mechanicum.
The next step up was the Sage.
Having a Grand Bishop personally guard the gates… was indeed quite impressive.
But this was still only a minor setback.
To Martins’s left and right, the two Chapter leaders also exerted their strength.
Reverend Rizzo raised his scepter, and a surge of power erupted from it.
The Gravity Scepter directly opened a force field, not too large, but large enough to encompass them all.
The barrage of projectiles, even the energy beams, that entered the force field were distorted and deflected.
The gravity field’s power was unleashed by Rizzo’s scepter, and was theoretically just a capability of the equipment. However, relying solely on the equipment’s capabilities would certainly not be enough to completely intercept the full firepower of a combat-oriented Grand Bishop.
If we truly mean the value of equipment, how can this age-old scepter compare to the equipment a ruling bishop, using all the resources at his disposal within the sect, equips his transformed body with?
It’s probably not even a hair’s breadth of it.
Yet, in Rizzo’s hands, he’s achieved just that.
According to the priests, this is the ‘power of faith,’ the ‘blessing of the Divine Emperor.’
However unscientific, it’s the reality.
Elsewhere on Martins’s side, Henrik Larsen was also unleashing his powers.
He held a psychic staff custom-crafted from the Ming Yang Sect, and the precious gem atop it shone with a brilliant blue light.
A streak of blue light, emerging from the void, pierced through the ceiling, and formed into a thunderbolt, striking the Ruling Bishop with a fierce force.
Henrik Larsen was arguably one of the first recruits trained by the Phoenix upon joining the Alliance. His psychic talent had been discovered during Governor-General Gu’s construction of the psychic team.
Within the chapter, there were a dozen or so others with similar psychic talents, and together they formed the Phoenix Think Tank.
Initially, the position of Think Tank Director was vacant within the Phoenix, and there was competition among the Think Tanks for it.
As the most senior, Larsen became the first and only psyker to achieve a breakthrough to the A-level in pure psychic power. He naturally assumed the position of Think Tank Director and became the leader of the Think Tanks.
As an A-rank psyker, and crucially, a Space Marine, his physical and spiritual strengths were far greater than those of mortals. This clearly reflected his psychic abilities, making him even more powerful than the average A-rank psyker.
The neurozoa interfered with his ability to accurately teleport. A forced attack, with the transmission failing and half his men lost, would be too much of a loss to bear.
However, if he attacked purely with psychic power, as a Space Marine A-rank psyker, he wouldn’t be suppressed to the point where he couldn’t even radiate a single shred of psychic energy.
This lightning strike charred the Archbishop to a crisp.
He wasn’t killed instantly, but several of his weapons were damaged, and his neural signals were disrupted.
His internal self-repair mechanisms were already operating urgently, and should be able to complete a preliminary repair within seconds.
But Martins wouldn’t give him that chance.
Knowing his bolter would be ineffective against a foe of the Archbishop’s caliber, Martins simply abandoned his ranged weapon. He wielded his phase sword, and at the moment of the thunderbolt’s impact, he launched himself into action, charging straight at the Ruling Bishop.
The two colossal mechs, acting as gatekeepers, reacted instantly.
One blocked the Ruling Bishop’s path, raising its great shield. The other swung its massive hammer, sweeping it towards Martins.
Despite the heavy armor of a cavalry terminator, Martins was able to dodge the hammer with a seemingly effortless leap. With a single sweep of his phase sword, he slashed the colossus’s hammer-wielding hand at the wrist.
Without stopping, he leaped high again, leaping half a body length taller than the colossus, skirting the great shield and plunging his phase sword into its skull.
The impact sent the dead colossus reeling. Martins stood up, sword drawn, and locked eyes with the newly recovered Ruling Bishop.
His red, mechanical eyes betrayed no emotion, but panic was evident.
Multiple weapons on its body flashed, and a torrent of artillery fire was about to overwhelm Martins.
But before that could happen, the dark green phase sword slashed diagonally through the entire body of the ruling bishop.
Through the body that was split in half, Martins was finally able to face the steel gate directly.
The four company champions turned around and, together with Rizzo and Larsen, formed a small line of defense to prevent other enemies from approaching.
Another technical sergeant from the other chapter stepped forward quickly.
To deal with such a heavy pure alloy gate in front of them, some special means were needed.
They were prepared.
“Prepare for blasting!”
“Open!”
