[Extra 52. Dawn of the End of the World (8)]

“Perhaps we can try to surrender. At least our hands are not stained with the blood of those people. We…maybe we can pray for the city lord’s forgiveness and let him give us a way out.” The old man sighed and shook his head.

As if feeling Joyner’s cold gaze, the old man added, “Please forgive me, sir.”

Everyone else remained silent, and the atmosphere in the air became strange.

The humble thoughts of these people once again shattered Joyner’s outlook. She can easily decide a person’s life or death by physically cutting off his connection with the world, without any difficulty.

But how do you change a person’s mind?

too difficult!

“Huh… got it.”

Joyner looked calm. She found the piece of completely cut snake skin from the car, quickly made a package, packed dozens of kilograms of snake meat and carried it on her shoulders.

Then, she strode away without looking back, without any hesitation.

“If this is your wish, then do whatever you want.” Her voice floated lightly along with the cold air.

That’s ridiculous!

Although she has experienced so many hardships in this era, Joyner feels that she still does not truly understand the world, nor has she established a so-called sense of identity or bond with these people in need.

If Joyner hadn’t made the promise in her heart, she wouldn’t have had to go to such trouble.

But Joyner thought of her father, who always warned her to keep her promises when he was alive, because he hated people who broke their promises.

“Wait a minute…wait for me!”

A timid voice sounded behind Joyner, and Harris was seen running all the way, wading across the wet ground and chasing Joyner’s shadow.

The two figures quickly disappeared into the darkness.

The morning in Hidden Sand Castle was gray.

Last night, the commotion near the West City Gate did not seem to affect the daily life of the people in the neighborhood.

Over the past few hundred years, this city has been stripped of its skin and flesh, leaving only the bones built of stone. Most of the prosperity of the past has faded into ruins.

These ruins have obviously been renovated countless times, and their surfaces are dilapidated and scarred. They have been rebuilt again and again in the past few decades by people who still miss their homeland. They stubbornly believe that the future of this land lies in the revival of the past.

Although, no one knows what this city looked like in the past.

Like the city walls and ruin-like buildings, the inner city of Hidden Sand Castle is just a shadow of its past glory.

Joyner followed the gradually increasing crowd to the bustling area, but looking around, what she saw was nothing more than a parody of the forgotten history of the pre-civilization era.

Even a human settlement in the ruins is indispensable for “rules”. After all, there are nearly 10,000 people living here. Without rules, it is impossible to restrain people’s behavior and their greed and selfishness. At least within a radius of a hundred kilometers, it is difficult to find such a large-scale settlement.

Joyner’s head was wrapped in a gray cloak, which was a deliberate disguise because she didn’t want to be so conspicuous. Like her, Harris’s clothes looked shabby, but they fit in almost perfectly with the surrounding environment, with no flaws visible.

Joyner found a few people on the roadside, asked about the general direction of the market, and took Harris towards the center of the city.

broad street leading to the dilapidated building was crowded with hundreds of people. Wizened old men who looked like wise men sat under the porch, smoking pipes, and the incense smoke evaporated like mist.

In the tattered tents on the other side, there were ragged people living, including a few children. They looked like a family. Joyner noticed that tents like this one were everywhere. These people should be refugees. Soon they will be unable to pay. If they don’t want to starve to death, they will have no choice but to sell themselves and become slaves of rich families.

Joyner saw the markings of many different gangs, but two stood out in particular.

She knew nothing about the gangs in this place and guessed that there were marks from the Xuan Ming Gang. She also silently remembered the other marks. In her memory, she still remembered that the Xuan and Ming gangs were still sworn enemies, but now they were sitting together peacefully like comrades on the battlefield.

The market in the city was submerged in dim colors and noise. There was only an earth wall between the animals in the corrals and the residents in the city, and the air was filled with various mixed smells. Canvas awnings were draped over the stone arches and the surrounding broken walls, covering almost the entire street. The noisy bargaining sounds, mixed with the pungent smell of spices and sweat, could be heard everywhere.

Joyner completely ignored the vendors’ self-promotion and their desperate pleas for survival. She struggled to squeeze her way through the crowd. From time to time, someone would grab her by the skirt and pull her to one of the stalls.

Everything sold here was stuff Joyner had never seen before, and people who were so poor were willing to sell anything. Including animal meat of unknown origin, home-woven cloth, fruits and vegetables that don’t look very fresh, wild vegetables, various groceries, and parts removed from old machinery.

So Joyner frowned, pulled away and ran away.

She wanted to find a bigger stall to explore the way first, pay her respects, and sell the snake meat.

She roughly learned from Lao Bai’s mouth that this batch of snake meat was worth a lot of money, at least two to three hundred yuan. Of course, she didn’t know that it was just Lao Bai’s guess. In fact, the value of this batch of goods was much higher than that figure.

However, Joyner had no idea about the money in Hidden Sand Castle, so she just learned about it while visiting the market.

As for making money, Joyner wants to use the money to buy some daily necessities and food that can be stored for a longer period of time, so that she can take the food back and distribute it to the refugees.

Joyner strode through an archway, while listening to the conversations of people in the market, while looking at the piles of hard-built ashlar stones above her head.

There was a water vendor on the roadside. He was using a metal device with a wheel to pour water mixed with sediment into a thick-bottomed glass bottle.

“Want some water? Fresh, from the Life’s Gate at the north gate of the city -” Seeing Joyner passing by, the vendor raised his head.

Joyner knew she shouldn’t stop. It was near the end of the market and the crowd was obviously much smaller. Maybe it was because of her dress, or maybe the snakeskin pocket was too conspicuous, but she always felt like there were eyes nearby peering at her.

Yes, she shouldn’t have stopped – but she stood still.

“Excuse me, where is the biggest butcher’s shop here?”

“Butcher’s shop? I don’t think so…”

The vendor looked at Joyner’s dress and wanted to deal with it casually. But when he squinted to see through the shadows under the turban, his face suddenly turned pale and his eyes widened.

There was an indescribable coldness in the eyes under the shadow of the cloak. The hawker’s heart tightened and he shuddered for no reason.

“Well, you should go to the rich area and take a look, right at the end of the market, and then turn left and take the clean road.”

“Thank you.”

Joyner turned around and left, taking Harris out of the market.
