Chapter 3 Lost Children

The Jiang family’s lobby and corridors were deserted, save for the occasional servant sweeping the floor. The martial arts training grounds, once used for displaying prowess, were also deserted, though the wear and tear on them suggested frequent use.

Jiang Li wandered the Jiang family home like a ghost.

He had followed his memories to many places, but five hundred years later, the Jiang family’s present state was far different from what Jiang Li remembered.

The closest thing to his memory was the small house he’d lived in at the beginning of his time travel, which bore an eighty-degree resemblance.

He suspected someone had moved in after he’d left, and since he’d become the Human Queen, the Jiang family had hurriedly cleaned up the small house, striving to restore it to its original state.

Jiang Li shook his head with a hint of regret and headed for the ancestral hall.

The Jiang family held ancestral worship services, with the oldest member kneeling in the hall to pray for the ancestors’ blessings. The rest remained in their rooms, fasting for nine days, uttering no words, as a sign of piety.

Inside, a frail old man knelt, his face covered in wrinkles that nearly obscured his eyes.

Jiang Li walked up to him and cast a spell, revealing the old man’s youthful appearance. His features bore a striking resemblance to Jiang Yixing’s. He was either Jiang Yixing’s son, grandson, or even a younger generation.

Jiang Yixing’s memorial tablet was prominently displayed at the bottom of the pile.

Jiang Li sighed softly and turned to leave the Jiang residence.

Jiang Yixing had died after all.

Although it was within his expectations, he still felt a little uninterested.

Jiang Li strolled out of the Jiang residence, his thoughts interrupted by a shrill voice.

“Sir, it’s been ten days. Why haven’t you sent anyone to look for our child?”

“We demand an audience with the City Lord!”

Across from the Jiang residence was the City Lord’s Mansion. Several couples were begging the guards there to see the City Lord, but the guards remained indifferent, as if they hadn’t heard their pleas.

“No one may see the City Lord without his permission. Please leave immediately.”

Another guard, unable to bear watching, patiently explained, “Everyone, the City Lord’s Mansion is always short-staffed, and you only claimed your child was stolen. You found the trail and followed it all the way to Qingcheng before losing it. Qingcheng has so many people coming and going every day, maybe the traffickers were just passing through. Even if we wanted to look for them, we wouldn’t know where to start.”

“Children have gone missing in several nearby cities, and all traces disappeared in Qingcheng. Our child must be here!” another man exclaimed indignantly.

He had tied a locating amulet to his child’s wrist. After the child went missing, he followed the trail to Qingcheng, only to find it vanished. He’d also encountered several other parents in similar situations, and some had even lost their children in Qingcheng.

He wouldn’t believe Qingcheng was safe!

“My child was lost in Qingcheng. How could the traffickers just be passing through?”

another expressionless guard said, “Please understand that we’re short-handed. If you can prove the traffickers are in Qingcheng, we’ll definitely send someone to look for them. Okay?”

“What nonsense!”

“We want to see the City Lord!”

“Our child was lost here, and the officials are doing nothing. Is this how the Land of the Human Emperor behaves?”

“My child was lost in Qingcheng, and we still need proof? That’s ridiculous!”

The guards and parents’ voices grew louder, finally erupting into an argument that attracted the attention of the Jiang family’s guardians.

“How can you be so noisy on the Jiang family’s ancestral memorial day?” A guardian emerged from the Jiang family and sternly rebuked them.

“As guards of the City Lord’s Mansion, you actually allowed a bunch of unruly people to gather and cause trouble in front of the mansion. Aren’t you afraid of the City Lord’s reprimand?”

The guards hurriedly tried to drive them away. Jiang Li couldn’t stand it anymore, so he dispelled his concealment spell and sneered from the sidelines.

“The Jiang family is so arrogant! You even control the city lord’s mansion. If you’re so nosy, how about you take over the sanitation in front of the city lord’s mansion?”

The guardian was furious. “How dare you speak disrespectfully to the Jiang family!”

The parents of the missing children and the city lord’s mansion guards were also surprised. The current Human Emperor came from the Jiang family. Not only in Qingcheng, but even in the entire Great Zhou Dynasty, no one would dare to speak of the Jiang family like that. This guy must be a fool.

Suddenly, a middle-aged man rushed out from the side and quickly grabbed Jiang Li. While smiling apologetically to the Jiang family guardian, he secretly sent a message to Jiang Li. “

Boy, you’ve just entered the martial arts world and you’re already contradicting the Jiang family. You’re tired of living. Get out of here! This matter involves the Jiang Human Emperor. Don’t get involved in this mess!”

The middle-aged man hurriedly pulled Jiang Li away.

Before anyone could react, the two men disappeared.

“Where are you?”

“Whose family are you from? Didn’t anyone tell you not to mess with aristocratic families before you left home?”

the middle-aged man dragged Jiang Li to a secluded corner and chided him.

He saw Jiang Li’s youthful expression, his impulsive actions, and the clothes he wore of the finest material. He knew he must be the child of a prominent family, seeking experience.

“If it were any other dynasty, I wouldn’t dare mess with an unreasonable aristocratic family, but this is the Great Zhou, where laws govern the country, and even

aristocratic families don’t dare to ignore them.” The middle-aged man’s words reaffirmed his belief. This boy must be from a major sect or family, otherwise his horizons wouldn’t be so broad, and he’d immediately start comparing it to other dynasties.

The Great Zhou Dynasty was vast, and even a Nascent Soul cultivator wouldn’t necessarily leave it in their lifetime, let alone compare it to other dynasties.

“Rule the country by law. This statement can be applied to any place in the Great Zhou, except the Jiang family.” The middle-aged man paused and continued, “The Jiang family has the support of Emperor Jiang Ren. Who in the Great Zhou dares to punish them? It is said that Emperor Jiang Ren is selfless, but who can guarantee that he will not have selfish motives for his own family?”

Jiang Li frowned slightly when he heard this: “As far as I know, Emperor Jiang Ren left the Jiang family for 500 years and never returned to the Jiang family once during this period. Doesn’t this prove that his relationship with the Jiang family has faded?”

The middle-aged man sneered: “This is just propaganda made by Emperor Jiang Ren to create an image of himself as selfless. Blood is thicker than water. Has he never returned to the Jiang family in secret?”

“When you are away from home, don’t believe everything you hear. This world is not as bright as you think.”

The middle-aged man pretended to have a keen eye on the dark side of the world.

Jiang Lili asked, “When did I come back here? How come I didn’t know?

” “Do you have any evidence for what you say?” Jiang Li hinted at a question, but the middle-aged man was so smug that he didn’t notice the hostility in Jiang Li’s tone.

“Of course I do,” the middle-aged man said confidently. “I once overheard a conversation between the Jiang family’s Patriarch and the Lord of Qingcheng. The Jiang family’s Patriarch hinted that Emperor Jiang Ren often secretly returned home to visit his descendants.”
