We Agreed On Experiencing Life, So Why Did You Immortals Become Real? - Chapter 10

Chapter 10: Back in Time
The Jiang family acted swiftly, cleaning the space in just half an evening. They then spent two days and two nights conducting repeated inspections to ensure no evidence remained. Only then did they leisurely inform City Lord Zeng that
the case could be reopened. Just as Clan Leader Jiang had anticipated, the two men, without evidence, were powerless. City Lord Zeng could openly cover up for the Jiang family, claiming insufficient evidence to convict Jiang Yixing, and even holding Jiang Li and Yuan Wuxing responsible for intentionally harming Jiang Yixing.
The only thing Clan Leader Jiang hadn’t anticipated was that their ancestor, Jiang Yixing, remained in a coma, and doctors could not determine the cause.
“I have ruled that Jiang Yixing is not guilty. If you two disagree with my ruling, you may appeal to the prefect within fifteen days of today.”
Jiang Li stepped forward and handed City Lord Zeng a piece of paper, as if he had been waiting for this moment.
“Here’s the petition.”
City Lord Zeng was annoyed by Jiang Li’s composure, and even more annoyed when he pulled out the petition in court.
Clearly, he had anticipated this outcome long before the court hearing and had already drafted the petition.
But so what? The prefect who would be handling this case had risen through the ranks from the position of Qingcheng City Lord and had helped the Jiang family cover up the baby theft.
And even if the prefect was fair, how could these two clueless individuals win their case without any evidence? Just by sheer stubbornness?
…
The Great Zhou Dynasty was divided into twenty-six prefectures, each with dozens of large cities under its jurisdiction. Qingcheng was one of the large cities, under the jurisdiction of Tianqing Prefecture. Naturally, the petition had to be delivered to Tianqing Prefecture’s prefect, Gong Peng.
After receiving the petition, Prefect Gong summoned Clan Leader Jiang and City Lord Zeng. After thoroughly questioning them about the incident, he felt reassured.
…
“Zhang Li, Yuan Wuxing, before we go to court, I have to inform you that this ruling is final. Unless there is new evidence that could overturn the original ruling, you two are not allowed to appeal further. Do you understand?”
Prefect Gong sat in the middle of the hall, with Zhang Li and Yuan Wuxing on one side and Clan Leader Jiang on the other. After all, Jiang Yixing was still unconscious, so it would be useless for him to come up.
Although Clan Leader Jiang had no expression as usual, Yuan Wuxing thought he must be laughing in his heart.
Outside the hall were a few dozen sparsely populated people, far fewer than before. After all, everyone knew that the evidence was insufficient and Jiang Li and Yuan Wuxing would not win the case. City Lord Zeng stood among them, ready to watch the fun.
“Understood.” Jiang Li replied loudly, and Yuan Wuxing followed suit with a clear word.
“But before we proceed, I’d like to add one more defendant.”
“Yes, but this ruling is final. You may not appeal by adding another person at short notice.”
Jiang Li nodded in understanding, his chin slightly raised, and he stood with his hands behind his back. “I’m suing Qingcheng City Lord Zeng for abusing his power for personal gain, covering up Jiang Yixing’s baby theft, and destroying crucial evidence. I ask Prefect Gong to rule on this!”
The Jiang clan leader’s heart skipped a beat, a sense of foreboding. To sue the city lord, an official of the third rank or higher was required, and Prefect Gong was a third-rank official. While this was legal, he couldn’t understand Jiang Li’s intentions. Could suing one more city lord guarantee victory?
He felt as if he’d forgotten something.
Unfamiliar with the law, the Jiang clan leader didn’t understand Jiang Li’s intentions, but City Lord Zeng and Prefect Gong understood immediately. Cold sweat immediately blanketed the backs of these two Nascent Soul cultivators, both seasoned by the elements.
“I suspect City Lord Zeng was responsible for the destruction of the crucial evidence in this case—the space where the blood sacrifice took place. I urge Prefect Gong to petition the court to request a time-travel reconstruction of the scene!”
Jiang Li’s words dashed the two men’s last glimmer of hope.
This matter needed to be brought to the court!
They didn’t have any powerful backers within the court!
Of the nine great dynasties, only the Great Zhou dared to govern by law, and only the Great Zhou had the ability to do so. The fundamental reason for this was that the Great Zhou royal family mastered the Way of Time, able to travel back through time!
However, the Way of Time carries with it a heavy weight of cause and effect, and cannot be invoked lightly. Therefore, the Great Zhou established several special circumstances under which it could be invoked, such as when the case has a national impact, or when it concerns the integrity of officials of the seventh rank and above…
and City Lord Zeng was a fifth-rank official.
“You slander me!” City Lord Zeng roared, disregarding his dignity. City
Lord Zeng truly wanted to protest his innocence. It was the Jiang family that destroyed the space; he was at most a witness. How could this brat claim he was the one who did it?
Jiang Li turned a deaf ear to this.
Whether City Lord Zeng had destroyed the spatial node or not was unimportant; what mattered was that he was the defendant in this case.
“Zhang Li, are you really going to petition the court to allow it to rewind time?” Prefect Gong stared at Jiang Li with a cold gaze, feeling that he had been tricked by Jiang Li.
More importantly, by rewinding time, not only could they see that it was the Jiang family who destroyed the spatial node, but they could also see that Jiang Yixing was practicing the magic in that space!
Once the news of Jiang Yixing’s practice of the magic was exposed, all the city lords in Qingcheng would be investigated by the court, and none of them would be able to escape!
Yuan Wuxing also realized why Jiang Li had allowed the Jiang family to destroy the spatial node; it turned out that he was waiting here.
“I’m sure.”
“Do you really want to apply?” Prefect Gong repeated the question word by word, his peak Nascent Soul aura radiating outward like the roar of a tiger. The yamen runners trembled, and were the first to fall to their knees, followed by Clan Leader Jiang and Yuan Wuxing.
“I’m sure.” Jiang Li still had that indifferent look, as if he didn’t see the murderous intent of Prefect Gong. He even took out the application he had already written from his sleeve and placed it in front of Prefect Gong.
Seeing the application with the ink still wet, Prefect Gong almost lost his patience and wanted to kill Jiang Li in court!
But in the end, he still didn’t dare to make a move.
If he made a move now, it would be the end of him.
“Zhang Li, right? Very good, very good!” Prefect Gong slammed the case table with his palm and left angrily. Clan leader Jiang and City Lord Zeng no longer avoided suspicion and followed behind with gloomy faces.
As Prefect Gong walked away, the murderous intent gradually faded. Yuan Wuxing finally regained some strength and stood up staggeringly.
“Governor Gong didn’t even make a move, and you were frightened into this state with just his murderous aura. He’s at the peak of the Golden Core stage, isn’t that shameful?” Jiang Li scolded with a smirk.
Yuan Wuxing smiled bitterly, “Senior Zhang, Governor Gong is at the peak of the Nascent Soul stage. Facing that level of murderous intent, a Golden Core stage cultivator wouldn’t be able to withstand it.”
Jiang Li pouted, “An excuse. I’ve killed someone at the peak of the Golden Core stage before.”
Yuan Wuxing was stunned, and after a long moment, he managed to utter, “Senior, you’re quite skilled.”
Yuan Wuxing truly admired Jiang Li. Look at him, as a Daoist monk, his status is even higher than that of the Great Zhou prince. Officials of the first and second ranks would greet him with a smile, yet he ignored his status and, in accordance with the laws of the Great Zhou, he was forcing the Jiang family to their death step by step!
Awesome!
