Starting from the Planetary Governor - Chapter 932
Chapter 924, Can’t Stop It
the forces led by Martins. They were far fewer than the main Chaos army.
In terms of numbers alone, the original church defenders had at least one Army Skeleton Division, numbering over 40,000 men.
Martins, on the other hand, brought with him an airborne brigade of around 9,000 men. Including other troops, the total number certainly didn’t exceed 13,000.
As for the church defenders, while they still had nearly 20,000 men alive, they were riddled with wounded and their heavy equipment was scarce.
They could be considered completely destroyed and negligible. Their enemy, the Chaos army, had a force here. Even with some losses from the failed landing site encirclement, the remaining force still numbered over 400,000.
But it was no use.
Martins’s troops, led by himself, cut through them like a hot knife through butter.
The Chaos army was powerless.
The primary difference lay in the sheer elite strength of the Alliance forces.
Led by Martins, the Space Marines, primarily Phoenixes, charged forward. While the Chaos Legion also numbered nearly a thousand Space Marines, a similar number to Martins’s, their individual strength was far inferior, and they were unstoppable once they were confronted.
Martins, as the foremost warrior, was unstoppable.
No one in the Chaos Legion could stand up to Martins.
Some unconvinced Chaos Champions attempted to stop and challenge Martins,
but their fate was no different from that of the one Martins had previously slain.
To date, Martins had yet to encounter anyone capable of withstanding his second strike.
Even when the enemy assembled several experts and simultaneously attacked Martins, attempting to halt his advance, the result was the same.
Instead of having to struggle to find a second strike after slashing one down, Martins could now instantly follow up with a single strike.
The Chaos Legion’s organized attempt to intercept the attack only accelerated its collapse.
All Chaos forces that dared to confront the Human assault were mercilessly crushed. Although only around 50,000 or 60,000 of the Chaos Legion’s 400,000-strong force were killed, their core strength had been decimated. Eighty percent of the
thousands of Chaos Space Marines, the backbone of the Legion, were slaughtered. The Chaos Sorcerers within the Legion attempted to rally for a counterattack, but they fell prey to the Humans’ opportune moment, being targeted by the Spellbreakers.
Ten “Unleaked” led by the “Insensitive” charged directly into the front, protected by hundreds of Space Marines. The Warp Storm, barely a ripple, was suppressed in an instant. The Chaos Sorcerers suffered mild reactions, including nausea and vomiting blood; others suffered severe headshots, leaving them instantly dismembered.
Subsequently, the Chaos Legion’s command center was destroyed.
At this point, they were effectively doomed.
It was at this point that Martins finally called off his attack and led his troops back to the cathedral area.
Even if the enemy still numbered over three hundred thousand, it was no longer a threat. The entire force was scattered, having lost its offensive capability.
And if he insisted on capturing and slaughtering every Chaos soldier and Chaos believer, it would be too much effort, so he chose not to.
The forces at hand were still too few.
He led his troops back to the cathedral’s defenses.
…
Entering the cathedral’s crypt, Martins nodded to the twenty Imperial Guards.
As expected, their fighting prowess did not disappoint Martins. They annihilated the enemy forces in the catacombs without a single casualty.
He also met the Banyan Lizard Captain, named Tulsa.
Martins showered praise on this loyal warrior.
“Your glorious deeds will make the entire Banyan Lizard Chapter proud. You and your battle-brothers will bear the name of the Banyan Lizards, etched in the annals of Alliance warfare.”
Tulsa was thrilled!
While he still felt the pain of losing 80% of his Chapter, he now felt that the sacrifices had been worth it.
They had accomplished their mission, held out until reinforcements arrived, and prevented the Chaos enemy from escaping their target.
They had earned honor for their bravery. The Chapter would be proud of them, and the Alliance would be proud of them.
What could there be to complain about?
After gently sending Tulsa to rest, Martins and his researchers began to examine the ‘object’ before them.
“Can this coffin be opened?”
a Grand Archbishop from the Mechanicum, tapping away on a data panel, muffled his words. “We don’t recommend it… We know nothing about it. Acting rashly would not only be dangerous, but we might even destroy it.”
His voice sounded like a standard electronic synthesizer, but Martins could still detect a fervor within it.
It was easy to understand.
Perhaps for this Grand Archbishop, this object was the catalyst for his ascension to Sagehood.
Martins asked gravely, “Can it be transferred?”
Meanwhile, a scholar from the Order of Psionic Powers said, “That’s not recommended either. Based on the actions of the Chaos traitors before, we can roughly infer that simply physically transferring this object’s carrier is useless. Otherwise, they would have simply carried the coffin away.”
Now, Martins was in a difficult position.
They had indeed won the immediate battle, and the Chaos forces on the ground had indeed been crippled.
However, their true strength lay in the Scourge Fleet in the sky, which still existed.
This “thing” seems quite important, and the Disaster Fleet will likely not give up.
The orbit above their current area is controlled by the Disaster Fleet, making it easy for them to resupply their forces and restructure their ground forces’ command structure.
They’ll likely renew their attack within two days.
Meanwhile, their own fleet is still in orbit on the other side of the planet, making it much more difficult for them to resupply their forces.
Furthermore, Martins has to worry about enemy orbital bombardment.
Although they haven’t faced such trouble in previous battles, their decision not to bomb the church area is likely out of concern for this “thing,” not out of mercy.
However, if the situation becomes untenable, whether they will relinquish their restraints is unclear.
With this in mind, Martins gave his orders:
“Research what this thing is and figure out how to take it away. I’ll buy you as much time as possible, but you must expedite the process.”
“Understood!”
