Starting from the Planetary Governor - Chapter 572
Chapter 570, Right in front of you
. As Chapter Master, Martins wasn’t the type to command from the back. When necessary, he would lead the charge, charging to the front lines, even shouldering the most arduous offensive tasks. At
that very moment, he was one of a dozen Terminators teleported into the enemy lines.
His sword, gleaming green, flickered through the enemy lines.
No Mechanicus unit could stand a chance against him.
As Chapter Master, Martins, already a Chapter Champion, had further strengthened his strength after his duel with Erso, Chapter Master of the Fury, and the near-death experience. Furthermore
, not only was his personal prowess formidable, but his equipment was also refined to the limit, incorporating nearly all of the Alliance’s cutting-edge technology.
He dodged a laser lance strike from a Dragoon, then slashed with his green greatsword, severing the Dragoon’s long legs at the knee. He then stomped on the fallen operator, crushing him to death.
Throughout this process, the phase sword clashed repeatedly with the chainsaw axes and power swords wielded by the multiple arms of a basilisk, severing these high-quality weapons, also manufactured by the Alfonzo Mechanicum, in a matter of moments.
He also severed the barrels of two guns aimed at him, then plunged his sword fiercely into the basilisk’s head.
The basilisk twitched a few times before falling completely motionless.
Martins was undoubtedly the most efficient of the Phoenix killing machines.
Not only did he possess unparalleled strength and experience, but his gleaming green phase sword also played a crucial role.
Phase weapons were the most advanced of the many melee weapon technologies Gu Hang had developed. Their origins might not even be human technology.
Since Gu Hang’s development of this weapon technology, the Alliance has been unable to mass-produce such equipment, relying solely on finished black boxes and producing them at a very slow rate.
Furthermore, the energy and materials required were unexpectedly high.
To date, the Alliance had only acquired fewer than fifty phase weapons.
Most of them were deployed to the Phoenix Regiment.
Wielded by a champion like Martins, their effectiveness was astonishing.
This wasn’t Martins’ first time using this weapon, but it was his first time using it in actual combat.
Its effectiveness was beyond expectations.
With this sharp weapon in hand, his killing intent was unstoppable.
He slashed through every enemy before him with sword after sword.
As the two armies engaged in a chaotic melee of close combat, command became unnecessary.
Martins’s primary role was to demonstrate his prowess to the utmost, swiftly and effectively dispatching as many enemies as possible.
By the time he had slain the twenty-fourth enemy, the battle was over.
The elite Skitarii guarding the Triple Arch had been utterly annihilated.
Even those who attempted to flee were pursued and annihilated by the Phoenixes.
The Phoenixes paid a heavy price for this.
Over twenty of the two hundred warriors who participated suffered casualties
—a significant number.
At this point, no one could expect a smooth journey ahead. Their whereabouts must have been discovered, and they would surely be blocked by the Skitarii, who were on high alert.
They couldn’t even choose a more cautious approach, which might have saved them significant casualties in a single battle. However, the pressure of the attack was immense. Any delay would likely increase the number of opponents they faced later, hindering the entire operation and potentially even completely failing.
This forced the Phoenixes to resort to a high-risk, quick-attack strategy, which would undoubtedly result in numerous casualties.
However, if they continued at this rate, they would lose twenty men in each battle. How many more battles would they have to fight? Could
they afford such casualties?
How many would actually reach their mission location?
This loomed large in Martins’ mind.
But there was also a silver lining.
First, not all of the Phoenixes’ twenty-odd casualties were dead, or even incapacitated.
Space Marines were far more resilient to damage than mortals.
A deep puncture wound to the chest or abdomen, even one that pierced a vital organ, would be fatal for a normal mortal. Even if it wasn’t immediately fatal, medical intervention would be necessary.
But with Space Marines, not only would they not be incapacitated, but with a simple treatment from the Apothecary, they could even join the troops and continue fighting, though their combat effectiveness would be slightly affected.
These individuals accounted for half of the casualties.
The remaining half, around ten, represented the true losses: six killed and five critically injured and unable to move.
Even with this casualty ratio, it was unclear what the situation would be like later in the battle.
As for the seriously injured, neither the Alliance nor the Phoenix had a habit of executing them.
While it alleviated their suffering and reduced the burden on the team, it was especially unsuitable to bring along a burden during an independent raid like the Phoenix was currently undertaking.
Yet, they brought them along anyway.
At least, Martins judged, the situation wasn’t that dire yet.
Within their ranks, the Apothecaries could quickly treat and stabilize injuries, and they also had equipment to tow and carry critically injured and incapacitated soldiers. A dedicated team could simply be assigned to this task.
Events seemed to confirm Martins’s assessment.
For example, the Skitarii who had just been stationed at the Triple Arch were considered among their elite. From the smallest Death Slaves to the most expensive Basilisks, their numbers were generally small.
Although the Phoenixes’ movements had been discovered, and enemies began to appear in droves on the road behind them, attempting to block their advance, the hastily deployed units could only be the nearest, not the strongest.
In fact, the Phoenixes’ assault speed far exceeded expectations.
Many of the improvised defenders had no time to establish positions and were often caught directly in the Phoenixes’ assault in narrow passages or spacious cabins.
Without cover, vehicles, or heavy firepower… such defenses were useless to the Space Marines.
They moved forward effortlessly, using multiple Terminator squads as the spearhead of the assault, piercing the enemy lines.
Martins always fought on the front lines, and his demonstrated prowess was one of the greatest reasons for the Phoenixes’ unwavering advance.
Countless Skitarii elites of all kinds were slain by Martins’s phase sword.
Leading the team, they have successfully reached the mission target location.
The protozoan chamber is right in front of them!
