Chapter 363 There Really Are Ghosts

“City Lord, you’re wrong.”

Ji Kongkong glanced at the Anyang City Lord, his tone calm, his earlier fear completely invisible.

Last night, Du Ping clearly had no intention of molesting women. He was merely, as a cultivator in the Fusion Stage, approaching to investigate the white figure that looked like a ghost.

The Anyang City Lord couldn’t have failed to see this, yet he still insisted that Du Ping had molested women, which only showed that he wanted to credit him as an achievement.

Cold sweat drenched the Anyang City Lord’s back. Princess Nineteen was warning him.

There was no doubt of a crime, and the evidence was overwhelmingly favorable to Du Ping. Du Ping was cleared of all charges and left the government office unharmed.

Jiang Li saw Ji Kongkong still trembling and couldn’t help but laugh, “From the way you warned the Anyang City Lord just now, I thought you weren’t afraid of ghosts anymore.”

After leaving the government office, Ji Kongkong’s fear returned, his hands shaking, clearly still terrified of ghosts.

“Thank you, Princess Nineteen, for your support of justice.”

Seeing the restored footage from last night, Du Ping vaguely recalled seeing the figure in white the previous night. He’d thought she looked strange and eerie, and wanted to capture her for a closer look. Unexpectedly, the figure screamed and fled upon seeing him.

“This is my duty,” Ji Kongkong feigned composure, not wanting to embarrass Uncle Jiang.

But the thought of last night’s ghost still filled her with fear.

“In that case, I can’t take you with me on this ghost hunt.”

“No, I want to go.”

“Are you no longer afraid of ghosts?”

“I’m still afraid, but I’m also curious.”

Seeing Ji Kongkong’s expression, Jiang Li thought of those in his past life who were afraid of horror movies but also loved watching them.

“Human Emperor, can you take me with you?” Du Ping also found this intriguing and wanted to know what ghosts were all about.

As a Fusion Stage cultivator, he knew ghosts shouldn’t appear in Jiuzhou; there must be something behind this.

“Okay.”

…

Late at night, the three of them sat in a tavern, listening to Ji Kongkong recount her experiences over the years.

There wasn’t much to hear, really. It was just about her mastery of time and her exceptional talent for cultivation. While her peers were still struggling in the Foundation Establishment stage, she had already reached the Nascent Soul stage.

“It’s a shame I’m still a year behind the Buddha Master Wuzhi, who reached the Nascent Soul stage at fourteen,” Ji Kongkong lamented. She reached the Nascent Soul stage at fifteen, failing to break the record for the shortest attainment.

Du Ping thought about how he had reached the Nascent Soul stage in his thirties, a far cry from Ji Kongkong.

“You’re better than me. I was only at the fifth level of Qi Refining at fifteen, and only reached the Nascent Soul in my twenties.”

“The Human Emperor is being modest. You, like the Buddha Master Wuzhi, reached the Nascent Soul stage at fourteen. Later, someone, jealous of your talent, sealed your cultivation, resulting in you only being at the fifth level of Qi Refining at fifteen, the derision of your own people.”

“How come I don’t know this?” Jiang Li was speechless, wondering where Du Ping had heard this story.

“It’s the storytelling ‘The Legend of Jiang Renhuang’. It explains it very clearly.”

Du Ping noticed the strange look and asked cautiously, “Isn’t it wrong in ‘The Legend of Jiang Renhuang’?”

Jiang Li had heard several versions of ‘The Legend of Jiang Renhuang’, and none of them contained what Du Ping described. He must have heard a different version.

It didn’t matter; none of these storytellings recorded his true experiences anyway.

Ji Kongkong corrected him, “Of course it’s not right. Uncle Jiang was clearly born with immortal bones, and his power couldn’t be measured by levels. But his body couldn’t withstand the power of the bones, so a powerful being sealed them, allowing Uncle Jiang to gradually unseal them.”

“…”

Which version of ‘The Legend of Jiang Renhuang’ was this?

Jiang Li was helpless. People think they are incredibly powerful, so they invent many incredible stories, applying them to themselves to justify their own strength.

Jiang Li had also heard stories about himself as the reincarnation of the Immortal Emperor, trained in the mortal world, transcending time and reincarnation, uniting the three lives into one. His power, past, present, and future, remained undiminished, unwavering, eternal and unique.

Every time Jiang Li listened to “The Legend of Emperor Jiang,” he heard something new and enriched his knowledge. He hadn’t even realized he’d done all this before.

Who could blame him for being a Mahayana cultivator, a figure who only appears once every tens of thousands of years?

“It’s appeared!” Du Ping suddenly declared, abruptly standing up and running for the door.

He enveloped Anyang City with his spiritual sense, waiting for the ghost to appear.

Du Ping saw, in the same spot as last night, a woman in white squatting on the ground, muttering words like “next life” and “rebirth,” her hands clasped together.

“That’s you!” Du Ping was about to lunge when Jiang Li grabbed her collar and held her back.

“Look carefully, this is a living person,” Jiang Li pointed at the woman in white, who was simply burning paper.

“Excuse me, what are you doing?” Ji Kongkong squatted down and kindly inquired.

Ji Kongkong was surprised to discover the other person was a Jindan-stage cultivator, though his appearance was aged, as if he had suffered a traumatic event.

“Sacrificing my child,” the woman in white said with a sorrowful expression.

“My name is Qi Ming. Fifty years ago today, my enemies came and killed my daughter, Xiaofang, here. Although they were punished, my child will never return.”

“Every year on this day, I come here to sacrifice my daughter, hoping she will have a good afterlife.”

“She was only sixteen, at the prime of her life. How could she be gone just like that?”

Although fifty years had passed, Qi Ming still felt heartbroken and sobbed every time she thought about it.

Ji Kongkong patted Qi Ming’s back with pity.

“It appeared,” Jiang Li suddenly said, his spiritual awareness covering Anyang City and the surrounding suburbs.

“It’s around midnight, just as the report said.”

The report stated that ghostly figures began appearing across Jiuzhou two weeks ago, most appearing around midnight. They prefer quiet and are afraid of people. No injuries have been reported so far.

“Why didn’t I see it?” Du Ping wondered. He also used his spiritual sense to cover Anyang City, but found nothing.

But now was not the time to delve into details. Du Ping and Ji Kongkong hurriedly followed Jiang Li’s steps and arrived at the cemetery on the outskirts of the city.

Ji Kongkong, upon seeing the scene at the cemetery, grasped the corner of Jiang Li’s clothes and hid behind him.

Shadowy figures appeared in the cemetery one after another, appearing and disappearing. Ji Kongkong and Du Ping desperately used their spiritual sense, but it still showed the cemetery empty, while their eyes could clearly see it.

“They must be ghosts,” Jiang Li confirmed. He had seen the two ghost messengers, Heibai Wuchang, and these shadowy figures resembled Heibai Wuchang’s body structure, though they were far less powerful.

If ghosts had cultivation levels, then Heibai Wuchang would be celestial beings, while these ghosts were mortals.

Not the mortals of Jiuzhou who had reached the third level of Qi training, but mortals who had never truly cultivated.

“But the report says that there are ghosts everywhere in Anyang City. Why does it seem that all the ghosts in Anyang City are concentrated here?”
