1264: Bones

“What’s wrong?” The two girls were startled by his reaction.

Zuan said solemnly, “I have the ability to foresee danger. Just now, with the blessing of Fireworks, I predicted what would happen if I stepped onto those chains. But every time I stepped on a chain, the end was death, and a horrible death.”

“How could this be!” Isabella’s face turned pale, and she hurriedly pulled his arm. “Then don’t go. This is a road to certain death.”

Fireworks frowned and said, “It doesn’t make sense that all eight roads are dead ends. Brother Zu, think about it carefully. Is there really no way out?”

Zuan shook his head and immediately explained to the two girls the ways of death on each of the eight chains.

“If the only possibility is the first one, there’s no final death after falling, and there might even be a glimmer of hope.”

Fireworks tried to stop him, “No, this chasm is too dangerous. Even the slightest breeze has such destructive power. Falling down would definitely be a horrible death.”

“Yes, yes,” Isabella hastily agreed, holding onto Zuan tightly, as if afraid he’d impulsively choose the first chain.

“But if I don’t try, going back is also a dead end.” Zuan’s face was filled with worry. He had finally arrived here, but behind him were those terrifying demon spiders. There was no need to fight back; it would be a one-sided crushing defeat.

With his temperament, it was better to fight than to face certain death.

“Brother Zu, don’t you have the ability to teleport or change form? Can you move directly to the other side?” Isabella suggested.

“No, those abilities require a place within the reach of my spiritual sense, but here my spiritual sense can only reach a few dozen meters, so I can’t sense the other side at all,” Zuan shook his head.

Hearing this answer, Isabella couldn’t help but despair.

Fireworks pondered for a moment and said, “Brother Zu, is it possible that walking through certain chains won’t actually kill you? Perhaps the images you saw aren’t the end. Think carefully. If what you saw wasn’t the true ending, then you could still survive in that situation.”

Zuan’s heart stirred, and he recalled the words that Mikado Mochiharu had left him: an end can also be a beginning. And now, as the Chronicler of Time, a messenger of mystery and chaos, he should understand this best.

Yes, I only saw those images, but they didn’t mean I would actually die.

Let me think about it. In which situation could I still survive?

After a moment of contemplation, a sudden realization struck him.

“Give me a moment.” Zuan reached the edge of the cliff, staring at the chains as if contemplating something.

Fireworks and Isabella, fearing to disturb him, held their breath, daring not to utter a single sound.

Zuan stood at the edge, unthinking. Instead, he took out his Spring and Autumn Brush and the Chronicle of Time and wrote a message on them.

A moment later, he arrived at the third chain.

Seeing him about to step forward, Isabella cried out in alarm, “No! You’ll be stripped of your flesh and blood, reduced to nothing but bones!”

Her voice trembled as she spoke.

Even Fireworks couldn’t help but inquire, “Are you sure this chain is okay?”

Zuan replied solemnly, “The cultivation technique I’ve learned is unique. Even if I turn to bones, I’m not guaranteed to die.”

The Hongmeng Yuanshi Sutra possesses powerful healing abilities, and as the master of the underworld, he possesses a far deeper understanding of death than most.

“It might not be fatal elsewhere, but it’s too risky here.” Isabella’s eyes were filled with worry.

Zuan agreed; common sense wouldn’t work here. Just

in case, he squeezed out another drop of his blood and handed it to Isabella, “If anything goes wrong, drip this drop of blood onto my bones. It can save me.”

Isabella bit her lip and nodded solemnly, determined to protect this drop of blood with her life.

“Since you’ve chosen this path…” Fireworks bit her lip and once again invoked the Dream Clan’s blessing power. “You will succeed!”

Waves of golden light once again shone upon Zaun.

With everyone’s lives hanging by a thread, Zaun abandoned all politeness. He patted her shoulder, then walked directly to the third chain and stepped on it.

As he stepped on it, the once aged, gray chain suddenly lit up.

The runes on it began to flow like water. The rift itself was already dark, and the distance was like indissoluble ink.

The glow from these runes on the chains was practically the only source of light.

However, as they illuminated, something beneath the rift seemed to be attracted, emitting eerie red and sometimes green flashes, like the eyes of some terrifying beast, adding an extra layer of oppression to the already eerie environment.

Isabella and Fireworks nervously reached the edge of the cliff, not even daring to breathe loudly for fear of disturbing Zaun. Their fingernails clenched so tightly that they nearly dug into their flesh.

At that moment, a strange gust of wind suddenly surged from beneath the rift. Isabella’s heart leaped to her throat, remembering the planetary probe shattered by it.

Zaun raised the Wind-Suppressing Orb Isabella had given him, and the destructive winds, unable to reach within three feet of him, quickly dissipated.

Seeing this, the two women on the cliff edge breathed a sigh of relief.

The Wind-Suppressing Orb was effective.

Zaun had no time to think about anything else, only to continue moving forward.

Soon, the winds from beneath the rift began to surge again, their force evidently even greater than before. However, with the Wind-Suppressing Orb in hand, the successive gusts proved ineffective.

As if realizing this, the subsequent gusts remained silent.

But Zaun showed no sign of joy. If the winds had continued, it would have been fine, but now that they had stopped, it proved conscious. Could there be some living being down there?

Unfortunately, the arrow was on the string and had to be released, so he could only grit his teeth and press on.

As he advanced, the runes on the chains grew brighter, and Zaun gradually felt an overwhelming pressure descend upon him, as if his very cultivation and realm were being eroded.

Once, with his cultivation, even walking a tightrope atop a cliff would have been effortless. But now, his extraordinary power faded, and the pressure grew, as if he were carrying a mountain on his back.

The stable chains began to sway violently, threatening to fall.

Though all around him was darkness, Zaun felt as if countless pairs of eyes, filled with malevolence and strangeness, were gazing at him from the shadows.

A wave of fear, regret, and despair washed over him.

I shouldn’t have come up here.

Why would I take such a risk to save someone else’s father?

Get back quickly.

…

Various thoughts raced through his mind, caught in the eyes of the two women, as he swayed more and more violently on the chains.

“Brother Zu!”

“Be careful!”

Zuan suddenly heard a familiar bird cry, and the shadow of Baiming spread its wings and flew high.

The chaotic noise around him gradually subsided, and Zuan’s eyes regained clarity.

I’m not just doing this to save someone else’s father, I’m doing this to save myself as well!

Having experienced countless life-and-death crises, his mind was so firm that he quickly cast aside all distractions and walked steadily on the chains again.

However, Isabella couldn’t help but cover her mouth at this moment, because she saw that with every step Zuan took, the flesh and blood on his body disappeared a little bit, and even the white bones could be faintly seen.
