Chapter 45: Centennial Mountain Ginseng

Centennial Ginseng!

When Lu Qing finished reading the information about the plant rhizome in his hand, he was astonished.

This was actually ginseng, a very precious medicinal herb mentioned in the “Bai Cao Jing” (Catalogue of Materia Medica)!

And it was over a hundred years old!

“Little one, what a great gift you’ve given me!”

Lu Qing exclaimed in amazement, looking at the ginseng in his hand, then at the small black beast.

You know, among the hundreds of herbs recorded in the “Bai Cao Jing” (Catalogue of Materia Medica), ginseng is undoubtedly one of the most precious.

And its value increases with age.

Ginseng that is only a few decades old is already very effective and worth a fortune.

A plant like this one, over a hundred years old, is even rarer.

In many herbal medicine shops, it would be considered a treasure.

“It really paid off that I caught all those fish for you,”

Lu Qing said with great joy.

Although he didn’t know the exact value of this centennial ginseng in his hand,

it was obvious that it was definitely more valuable than the Red Moon Carp.

After all, while the Red Moon Carp has nourishing properties, those nobles who pay such high prices for it are primarily interested in its delicious flavor.

But this century-old ginseng is different; it can truly save lives.

Precious medicinal herbs like these are often in short supply, and their presence is immediately sought after.

Furthermore, the ginseng in Lu Qing’s hand emanated a supernatural aura, tinged with a red hue,

suggesting that it possessed a subtle hint of a magical herb.

This precious herb’s value was perhaps even greater than that of ordinary ginseng.

Compared to this, the fish he’d been feeding the black beast these past few days paled in comparison.

Looking at the Night Spirit Cat, who was already leisurely licking its paws and washing its face nearby,

Lu Qing shifted his gaze, squatted down, and said ingratiatingly, “Little one, let’s make a deal. If you come across something like this again, bring it to me. I’ll catch whatever fish you want, okay?”

Anyone who saw Lu Qing in this state would notice.

His smile now resembled that of a strange uncle trying to coax a child with candy.

It wasn’t clear if the little black beast understood Lu Qing’s words.

After licking its paw, it simply glanced at Lu Qing sideways, then gracefully walked to the fence, hopped lightly, and disappeared into the night.

This time, Lu Qing could clearly see its gaze.

He felt as if a little beast looked down upon him.

Lu Qing was stunned for a moment, then smiled and shook his head.

Although despised by a little beast, he was still happy.

Lu Qing took the basin back to the kitchen, lit an oil lamp for the first time, and found a damp cloth.

Then, sitting in the living room, by the light, he began to clean the ginseng plant.

With careful care, the ginseng in his hands gradually became complete.

The main stem of the ginseng plant was quite plump, like a small radish.

The roots were very long, and the overall shape already vaguely resembled a human body.

If it continued to grow, it might actually become a small person.

Unfortunately, some of the roots were obviously broken.

This made the appearance of the ginseng less than perfect.

Apparently, the black beast had torn it apart while digging it out.

Although Lu Qing felt pity, he also knew he couldn’t be too ungrateful.

Honestly, the fact that the black beast had managed to dig up a single ginseng plant was already astonishing enough.

He couldn’t expect it to dig out the ginseng as perfectly as a herbalist.

After admiring the century-old ginseng for a while, Lu Qing carefully put it away.

He planned to take the ginseng to his master tomorrow to see how to maximize its value.

After all, although he had read the “Catalogue of Herbs” thoroughly, when it came to his knowledge of herbs, he still couldn’t catch up with his master, the miracle doctor.

The next morning, Lu Qing got up early and first imitated his master, doing two sets of health-enhancing punches in the yard. After feeling refreshed, he went to make breakfast.

After breakfast, he took Xiaoyan to the small courtyard halfway up the mountain.

Upon seeing the old doctor, he immediately took out the century-old ginseng wrapped in cloth.

“Master, last night I accidentally found a herb. I would like to ask you for your opinion on what to do with it.”

“Oh, what herb?”

The old doctor was a little surprised.

So late at night, was his disciple out to collect herbs?

“It’s this herb.”

Lu Qing opened the cloth, revealing the ginseng inside.

“This is…” The old doctor’s eyes widened when he saw the herb clearly. “Is this ginseng?!”

Surprised, he reached for the cloth bag from Lu Qing’s hand and took the ginseng plant, examining it closely.

“It truly is ginseng, and it’s of exceptional quality, over a hundred years old!”

After examining it for a long moment, the old doctor sighed with relief.

“Ah Qing, where did you get this ginseng? Did you go into the mountains last night?”

The old doctor looked at Lu Qing in astonishment.

Century-old ginseng of this quality typically grows in remote, deep forests.

Ordinary herbalists rarely venture into such areas.

Even he, in all his years of collecting, had only come across a few.

Judging by the freshness of this ginseng, it was clearly freshly dug.

How did Lu Qing get it?

Could he have ventured into the mountains last night?

But that was clearly impossible.

Facing the old doctor’s confusion, Lu Qing smiled, “Master, you’ll never guess who gave me this ginseng.”

“Someone? Who?” the old doctor asked, even more curious.

Who could be so generous as to give away such precious, century-old mountain ginseng?

“It was that little black beast I told you about before. Last night, after I fed it fish, it brought this ginseng to me.”

“That little black beast?” the old doctor exclaimed, taken aback.

Lu Qing then recounted the events of the previous night in detail.

Not only was the old doctor amazed, but Xiaoyan, who was standing beside him, also widened her eyes.

“It seems this little black beast is truly extremely intelligent, to the point of being able to understand human nature,”

the old doctor exclaimed after hearing Lu Qing’s story.

“Disciple thinks so too. I think it might even understand us.”

The look of disdain in the Night Spirit Fox’s eyes as he left last night was a reminder of that.

“This is the benefit of doing good deeds and accumulating virtue.” The old doctor stroked his beard and said, “If you hadn’t been kind-hearted that day and didn’t drive it away, but instead fed it fish every night, how could we have this good relationship today?”

Did I mean I didn’t drive it away because I was kind-hearted? I simply didn’t dare to drive it away!

Hearing the master’s words, Lu Qing was ashamed.

That little thing was very strong, who would dare to provoke it?

“Master, according to what you said, this ginseng is over a hundred years old. What is its value?” Lu Qing asked.
