Chapter 40: Apprenticeship, Hidden Secrets

Lu Qing’s apprenticeship ceremony was not complicated.

Old Doctor Chen was not a person who liked to make a scene, so he kept everything simple.

Therefore, Lu Qing just followed the procedure, and in front of everyone, he paid homage to the ancestor, then kowtowed, served tea, and called out, “Master, please have some tea. “

Old Doctor Chen took the tea while sitting on a chair and took a sip, and the apprenticeship ceremony was completed.

“Okay, get up.”

After drinking the tea, Old Doctor Chen said to Lu Qing.

“Yes, Master.”

Lu Qing stood up and stood aside with his hands hanging down.

Old Doctor Chen also stood up, saluted the villagers in the yard and said,

“Thank you all for coming to witness my apprenticeship ceremony. I am very happy to have a beloved disciple today. There are few people in the small yard, and I can’t prepare any food for you. I can only prepare a small gift for everyone.”

After that, he picked up a tray from the table behind him, on which were rows of small cloth bags.

“These are some medicine packets I made while I was free. They’re supposed to calm the nerves, help with sleep, and repel mosquitoes.”

“If you don’t mind, take one or two home and hang them above your bed. They’ll keep your home mosquito-free for ten to eighteen months.”

“So amazing?!” The villagers looked at the packets, amazed.

It’s mosquito season, and if these packets are as effective as the old doctor claims, they’re incredibly tempting.

For a moment, the villagers, who had been tempted to be polite, found it difficult to refuse.

The old doctor smiled and said to Lu Qing, “Ah Qing, go and distribute these packets to the villagers.”

“Yes, Master.”

Lu Qing took the tray, walked over to the villagers, and handed them out one by one.

“Grandpa Zhang, here,”

Lu Qing gave them to Grandpa Zhang first.

“Good boy, remember to learn from Old Doctor Chen in the future,”

Grandpa Zhang said with a look of satisfaction as he accepted the packets.

“I will, Grandpa Zhang,” Lu Qing nodded earnestly.

The other villagers took the medicine packets and smelled them. They were struck by a refreshing aroma, rich but not overpowering. They felt refreshed, knowing it was indeed a good thing, and quickly put the packets away.

The old doctor had personally prepared this medicine, and it was probably not available elsewhere, so they had to keep it safe.

“Fellow villagers, when you go back, remember to hang the medicine packets in your room. Otherwise, after half a month, the aroma will dissipate and the packets will be useless,”

said Old Doctor Chen, noting that some villagers hid the medicine packets with such care.

Hearing the old doctor’s words, some villagers finally gave up the idea of hiding the medicine packets.

After witnessing the apprenticeship ceremony, Uncle Zhang and the others began to say goodbye one by one.

But before leaving, Uncle Zhang pulled Lu Qing aside and reminded him that when he was free, he should remember to pay respects to his grandfather and parents and tell them the good news.

Seeing Lu Qing’s sincere agreement, Uncle Zhang left the mountain contentedly.

After all the villagers had left, Lu Qing remained standing in front of the courtyard, watching them walk down the mountain.

“Ah Qing, your grandfather formed a good relationship back then, which is why we have such a good group of neighbors today,”

Doctor Chen walked over to Lu Qing’s side, looking at the crowd at the foot of the mountain with admiration.

“Master, I never knew this. My grandfather and my parents never told me about it,” Lu Qing said.

“This just goes to show that your grandfather was a man of high character who never expected to repay a favor. It’s a pity that I arrived here a little too late and didn’t have the opportunity to meet such a scholar of such integrity,”

Doctor Chen said with some regret.

He had a feeling that if he had come here earlier, perhaps he could have become a close friend of Lu Qing’s grandfather.

“Master, do you know how my parents died?” Lu Qing suddenly asked.

“Because of what Grandfather Zhang said earlier?”

“Yes, I always thought my parents died in an accident, but Grandfather Zhang’s words suggest there’s more to it than meets the eye.” Lu Qing nodded.

The original owner’s memory had held that their parents had died in an accident, but now it seemed that was not the case.

Doctor Chen was silent for a moment, then shook his head.

“I don’t know about this either. Around the time your parents died, I was treating a distinguished individual in the city. After returning, I heard that they had tragically drowned, but I never got to see their bodies, so I’m not sure if that’s true.”

“If you want to know the truth, you’ll probably have to ask Mr. Zhang and the others,”

Lu Qing said silently.

Indeed, the original owner’s memory held this exact information.

Their parents had tragically drowned, and when their bodies were brought back, they were swollen and horrific, shocking them to their core.

The subsequent events occurred while the original owner was in a state of confusion.

The sale of land, the collection of the bodies, the mourning and vigil, and it seemed someone had even caused trouble.

By the time the original owner regained consciousness, their parents had already been laid to rest.

Looking back now, many doubts arise.

Unfortunately, the trauma the original owner had endured during that time was so severe that many of his memories were muddled, leaving Lu Qing with a difficult time to comprehend.

“However, I don’t recommend you go and ask Old Master Zhang and the others for the truth right now,”

Doctor Chen said, observing Lu Qing’s silence.

“Why is that, Master?”

“Since Old Master Zhang and the others have been hiding this from you, it’s probably for your and Xiaoyan’s sake. They’re afraid that knowing the truth might lead you to impulsive action. Do you still think they’ll harm you?”

Lu Qing recalled the villagers’ attitudes towards him and Xiaoyan since he woke up and shook his head.

“Grandpa Zhang and the others certainly aren’t that kind of people.”

Crucially, the information his supernatural powers had uncovered had never revealed anyone in the village with such a sinister mindset.

“If that’s the case, then you should trust Elder Zhang. They’re not telling you the truth now because they clearly think the time isn’t right.”

“So, your most important task now isn’t to pursue the truth, but to study diligently. When you’re capable enough, trust Elder Zhang and the others, they’ll reveal the truth to you.”

Lu Qing fell silent again.

In reality, his desire to know the truth wasn’t motivated by any impulse.

After all, although he inherited the original owner’s memories, he didn’t harbor any deep feelings for the “parents” he’d never met.

He was worried about whether the truth about the original owner’s parents’ death would harm him and Xiaoyan.

But as Master had said, he was still too weak.

Even if he knew the truth, it wouldn’t help.

It would be better to settle down and learn from Master first.

“I understand, Master,”

Lu Qing said after thinking this through.

Seeing that Lu Qing seemed to have figured it out, Old Doctor Chen smiled.

His disciple was a brilliant mind, and he didn’t want him to wallow in so-called hatred at such a young age.

That would only warp his mind.

Therefore, he was quite supportive of what Grandpa Zhang and the others were doing.

Seeing that Lu Qing’s face seemed a little gloomy, the old doctor decided to divert his attention.

“Ah Qing, now that you have become my disciple, there are some things you should know.”

Lu Qing raised his head.

Seeing that it was indeed effective, the old doctor laughed.

He continued, “Ah Qing, do you know what it takes to become a good doctor?”
