Chapter 38 Assessment (Please read it on Tuesday)

“Grandpa Chen, you said I don’t need to study the ‘Cao Cao Jing’ anymore?” Lu Qing was a little surprised.

“Yes, you’re learning faster than I expected. You’ve already mastered the ‘Cao Cao Jing’. Just review it more often. You don’t need to study it again,”

said Old Doctor Chen, stroking his beard.

He had been extremely pleased with Lu Qing’s performance recently.

Lu Qing’s intelligence had exceeded his expectations.

In just two weeks, he had already learned the entire ‘Cao Cao Jing’.

He had originally thought that if Lu Qing could read it fluently within a month, it would be considered a great achievement.

“Grandpa Chen, you taught me well.”

Lu Qing felt relieved.

Finally, he didn’t have to study the ‘Cao Cao Jing’ anymore!

God knows how thoroughly he had memorized the ‘Cao Cao Jing’ during this time.

It would be an understatement to say he could recite it by heart.

But he couldn’t just claim to have memorized the ‘Cao Cao Jing’ all at once.

Even if he wanted to show off his intelligence, there had to be a process of acceptance.

Otherwise, showing off how incredible he was right away would likely backfire.

Now, the moment had finally arrived.

“Lu Qing, although your intelligence has exceeded my expectations, the assessment we agreed upon must still proceed,” said Doctor Chen.

“Lu Qing understands. Please, Grandpa Chen, conduct the assessment,” Lu Qing said respectfully.

“You’ve already memorized the ‘Bai Cao Jing’, but memorizing a medical text isn’t enough; you need to apply it to practical use to truly understand it.”

“My test is simple. You have one hour to find ten medicinal herbs listed in the ‘Bai Cao Jing’ near the village and bring them to me.”

“Remember, you can’t bring the book with you, and you can’t pick the wrong herbs. You can’t damage the herbs while digging.”

Lu Qing silently remembered the old doctor’s words. After he finished, he said, “Is that all, Grandpa Chen?”

“Yes, that’s all. If you do these things, I will officially accept you into my sect as my eldest and only disciple.”

“Don’t worry, I won’t let you down!” Lu Qing said confidently.

“Take this medicine basket and hoe. Remember, you only have one hour. If you exceed the time limit, even if you collect all the herbs, you won’t pass.”

The old doctor handed Lu Qing two tools.

“Then I’ll set off now!”

Lu Qing took the basket and hoe and headed down the mountain.

As soon as he reached the foot of the mountain, he discovered a medicinal herb.

[Thunderroot Grass: Superior quality, medicinal.]

[Clears heat and detoxifies, effective for treating heat and coughs.]

This thunderroot grass was mentioned in the Classic of Materia Medica.

Seeing its exceptional quality, Lu Qing immediately bent down and began digging.

The hoe the old doctor had given him was quite sharp, so Lu Qing dug very carefully, fearing he might accidentally damage the herb.

After all, one of the requirements of the old doctor’s assessment was that herbs must not be damaged.

After carefully digging up the thunderroot grass and placing it in the medicine basket, Lu Qing pondered the time and felt a sudden sense of urgency.

It had taken him nearly a quarter of an hour to dig up just one thunderroot grass.

By that calculation, wouldn’t digging up ten herbs take another ten quarters of an hour?

The old doctor had only given him one hour for the assessment.

“I can’t be so slow anymore, I have to speed up.”

Lu Qing originally thought that he had supernatural powers, and it would be very easy for him to find ten medicinal herbs.

But now he knows that if he is careless, he may really fail the test.

Putting away his relaxed mentality, Lu Qing began to speed up and rush to other places.

Along the way, his eyes kept searching the grass on both sides of the road.

As long as he saw a plant similar to the one in the “Bai Cao Jing”, he would immediately use his supernatural powers to search for information.

After confirming that it was a medicinal herb recorded in the “Bai Cao Jing”, he would start digging immediately.

Dandelion, Xanthium sibiricum, Plantain…

one by one, the herbs recorded in the “Bai Cao Jing” were dug out by Lu Qing one by one and put into the medicine basket.

Digging herbs, his forehead was covered in sweat. A casual wipe left several muddy marks.

A passing villager, seeing Lu Qing like this, laughed.

“Ah Qing, what are you doing? You’ve made yourself look like a mud monkey.”

“Uncle Wang, I’m digging herbs. This is a task assigned by Grandpa Chen. I can’t be careless,” Lu Qing replied.

“It’s the old doctor’s task. You have to be serious. Do you need my help?”

Uncle Wang’s expression suddenly became serious.

The villagers’ respect for the old doctor was heartfelt.

When they heard that it was a task assigned by him, they stopped laughing.

“No, no, I can only do this myself. This is Grandpa Chen’s assessment of my learning progress during this period.”

Lu Qing waved his hand and refused.

“Is that so? Ah Qing, you have to work hard. Don’t let the old doctor down.”

Hearing Lu Qing’s words, Uncle Wang’s expression became even more serious. After all,

whether Lu Qing can learn well is related to the future medical care of the village.

“Okay, I’ll do my best,” Lu Qing said, waving his hand. “Uncle Wang, I’m leaving now. Grandpa Chen only gave me an hour for the assessment, and I still have to go collect herbs over there.”

Watching Lu Qing leave, Uncle Wang immediately ran back to the village.

Before long, almost everyone in the village knew that Lu Qing was completing the assessment assigned by the old doctor.

To the point that even if they saw Lu Qing, no one dared to disturb him,

fearing he would fail the old doctor’s assessment and be banished from the mountain.

Even the little kids were ordered not to approach Lu Qing, lest they disturb him while he was gathering herbs.

Concentrated on collecting herbs, Lu Qing didn’t notice the villagers’ actions.

He was simply surprised that the village seemed much quieter than usual today.

Normally, at this time of day, the little kids would be running around, causing chaos.

But the thought only flashed through Lu Qing’s mind before he put it aside.

He didn’t have time to dwell on such matters right now.

He had already dug up eight herbs, two more to go, but time had already run out.

If he didn’t hurry up, he might fail this assessment.

At this moment, Lu Qing felt a little regretful.

He hadn’t been more aware of the herbs around the village. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been so rushed.

It seems that relying too much on supernatural powers isn’t always a good thing.

He figured he could always find herbs with his powers, so he neglected them.

Fortunately, Lu Qing had luck, and soon found another herb mentioned in the Classic of Materia Medica.

“There’s only one left,”

Lu Qing breathed a sigh of relief after digging it up intact.

But he also knew time was running out.

“Where can I find this last herb?”

Lu Qing pondered for a moment, then suddenly slapped his head.

“Oh, how could I have forgotten it? It’s true that the light is dark, and I almost overlooked the thing I’m most familiar with!”

With that, he ran towards his home.

Some villagers were startled when they saw Lu Qing running.

“Ah Qing, what’s wrong? Did something go wrong with the assessment?”

“Nothing, my assessment is fine!”

Lu Qing didn’t have time to think about why the villagers knew about his assessment. He answered casually as he ran.

Soon, he ran to his home and smiled at the small patch of plants growing well in the corner of the yard.

“That’s you, Niu Gu Cao.”
