Chapter 28 Strange Sounds

The sudden noise startled Lu Qing, then he became wary.

What was that sound?

A human, an animal, or a rat?

He thought of the mysterious little beast that had stolen two large pieces of fish last night.

Could it be that creature again?

But he had already put the fish and meat away. Would this creature be so bold as to barge in?

Thinking of the information his supernatural powers had revealed that morning—that the mysterious little beast seemed to have sharp claws—Lu Qing couldn’t help but clench a stick beside his bed.

At that moment, he missed the electricity of his previous life.

If this were his previous life’s house, turning on the light would have scared off any beast.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t even light an oil lamp, let alone use bright light to scare away a wild animal.

The noise outside continued, like something scratching at the door.

Even though Lu Qing was always brave, he felt a little uneasy.

He gripped the stick tightly and quietly walked out of the room and into the hall.

Suddenly, a stick slammed against the door, making a loud noise.

The sound outside the door suddenly disappeared.

Lu Qing held the stick and stood in the hall, forcing himself to be calm.

After a long time, he did not hear the sound again.

But he did not dare to open the door to check rashly.

After a long time, after confirming that there was no movement outside, Lu Qing returned to the room.

It must be said that the calming effect of the Green Turtle Stone is still very good.

Xiaoyan was not awakened by such a loud noise just now.

Otherwise, Lu Qing would have to coax her for a long time.

But that night, Lu Qing did not sleep well.

Because he was afraid that the evil thing would return, he almost did not sleep all night. It was not until dawn that he slept for a while.

So when he went to see Doctor Chen the next day, Lu Qing had two big dark circles under his eyes and looked listless.

Seeing him like this, the old doctor frowned immediately.

“Lu Qing, I know you want to finish the ‘Catalogue of Materia Medica’ as soon as possible, but learning requires a balance between work and rest. Sometimes, blindly studying will only produce half the results with twice the effort.”

“Besides, if you want to become a doctor, you must take care of your body. If you can’t even take care of yourself, how can you maintain a clear mind and save lives?”

He assumed Lu Qing’s listless appearance was due to staying up late reading.

“Grandpa Chen, it’s not what you think,” Lu Qing said with a wry smile. “I didn’t sleep well last night for another reason.”

He then told the old doctor what had happened.

“Are you saying that a wild animal tried to get into your house last night, and that’s why you couldn’t sleep well?” The old doctor was surprised.

“Yes, I was worried it might sneak in and hurt Xiaoyan, so I didn’t dare sleep the whole time,” Lu Qing said, rubbing his eyes.

“Brother, how come Xiaoyan didn’t know?”

The little girl, completely unaware of what had happened last night, her eyes widened.

“You slept like a pig last night, of course you don’t know.”

Lu Qing reached out and tapped his sister’s nose.

“But this is not a solution. You can’t stay up all night watching over me.”

The old doctor thought for a moment, turned back to the house, and soon came out with a bag of things and handed it to Lu Qing.

“Take this medicine powder.”

“Grandpa Chen, what is this?” Lu Qing asked, holding the thing.

“This is the medicine powder I mixed myself. It contains a variety of medicinal herbs that can repel insects and animals. I usually use it for self-defense when I walk in the mountains.”

“From what you said, the beast should not be big.”

“When you go back, sprinkle the powder around the house, and the beast will surely be cautious and won’t bother you again.”

Upon hearing this, Lu Qing was overjoyed. “Thank you, Grandpa Chen!”

The old doctor had indeed provided this powder just in time.

Otherwise, Lu Qing would have considered setting a trap to capture the mysterious beast.

However, the information he had previously discovered with his supernatural powers made him hesitant to act rashly.

After all, the mysterious beast’s footprints alone were already at the White Light level.

Who knew how powerful it, the true master, truly was?

Putting the powder away, Lu Qing took out the “Catalogue of Herbs” and continued to consult the old doctor.

This time, the old doctor was even more surprised.

He discovered that Lu Qing was learning the “Catalogue of Herbs” very quickly.

Not only had he completely memorized what he had taught him yesterday,

but he had also thoroughly reviewed the remaining content, applying it to other situations.

At this rate, he would probably have finished the entire book in no time.

“Very good! I can see you really put in the effort yesterday,”

the old doctor stroked his beard and nodded with satisfaction.

“I won’t forget Grandpa Chen’s advice,” Lu Qing said respectfully.

“Okay, let’s stop here for today. You’ve gradually become familiar with the ‘Bai Cao Jing,’ but simply being familiar with a medical text isn’t enough.”

“Whether you’re a doctor or an herbalist, you need to know how to identify and select genuine medicinal herbs.”

“I remember there are some common herbs growing near the village. You can observe them regularly and compare them with the ‘Bai Cao Jing’ to see if the herbs you find there are consistent with what’s described in the book,” the old doctor advised.

“Yes, Lu Qing has made a note of it,” Lu Qing replied.

“By the way, you and Xiaoyan don’t have to come up here tomorrow. I’m going into town and selling the Red Moon Carp for you. You can study at home,” the old doctor added.

“Grandpa Chen, are you going into town?” Lu Qing said excitedly.

“Yes, the city pharmacy has ordered some herbs from me, and I’m going to deliver them,” the old doctor asked. “Why, do you need me to buy anything for you? Selling the Red Moon Carp will make you quite a fortune.”

“Yes!” Lu Qing said immediately.

He actually had something he wanted the old doctor to buy.

“Oh, what do you want?”

“I want an iron wok!” Lu Qing said. “Grandpa Chen, you know, our family went through a hard time, and I sold a lot of things, including our only iron wok, so I’m buying a new one.”

“An iron wok… that’s not impossible,” the old doctor thought for a moment, then agreed. “Anything else?”

“And salt. We’re running low, and I want to buy some.”

“Anything else?”

“No, let’s just buy these two for now,” Lu Qing shook his head.

He actually wanted to buy a lot more.

Oil, food, clothes, shoes—he wanted to buy a lot of things.

But he knew he had to be tactful.

The old doctor was his elder, and it was already a rare gift for him to help with things. If he pushed his luck and asked him to buy everything, he would be losing his temper.

If the iron wok and salt weren’t available only in the city, he wouldn’t have bothered the old doctor even with those two.

As for the rest, he could buy them at the market later.

After returning from Doctor Chen’s visit, Lu Qing immediately sprinkled the powder around the house.

He thought everything would be fine and he could sleep well.

However, when Xiaoyan fell asleep at night, he heard the voice again.
