Chapter 27: Simple Folk Customs and Bedtime Stories

When Lu Qing brought Xiaoyan back to the village and saw the villagers gathered under the big tree to chat,

he was greeted by smiles.

“Ah Qing and Xiaoyan are back?” a villager said with a smile.

“Yeah, just came back from Grandpa Chen.” Lu Qing nodded, a little puzzled, “What are you all doing here? Did something happen?”

“No, no.” The villagers shook their heads.

“Ah Qing, you must study hard when you learn from Doctor Chen!” an old man said at this time.

“Yes, if you have any difficulties, tell everyone, we are all from the same village, no need to be so polite.”

“It’s rare that Doctor Chen is willing to teach you medical skills, you must seize the opportunity!”

other villagers also said.

Looking at the concerned expressions on the villagers’ faces, Lu Qing was a little dazed.

He remembered what the old doctor said to him before he went down the mountain.

“Lu Qing, do you know any of the nearby villages? Why did I choose yours to settle down?”

“Lu Qing, I don’t know.”

“That’s because I really like the customs of your people.”

“I’ve traveled extensively for decades, and I’ve seen and lived in at least eight hundred villages.”

“These villages range from rich to poor, from benevolent to xenophobic.”

“But the customs of your village are rare and simple.”

“Unity and mutual assistance, harmonious neighborhood, mutual support.”

“Although the villagers occasionally quarrel, they don’t become enemies. When someone’s in trouble, they always help each other.”

“Such a harmonious village is rare, even in my travels.”

“When I first arrived in your village, I was attracted by this simple and honest atmosphere, and ultimately decided to settle down here.”

After hearing the old doctor’s words, Lu Qing was lost in thought.

Indeed, even he could sense the villagers’ deep simplicity.

Otherwise, in a less civilized village, he and Xiaoyan would have been met with indifference, even bullying.

They wouldn’t have been able to live peacefully in their own home like they do now.

“Grandpa Chen, I heard you say that villages outside seem different from ours?” Lu Qing asked.

“Very different. Even if other villages are harmonious, they don’t support each other like yours, with its strong sense of benevolence and righteousness.”

“Then why is our village different?”

“Well, I’m not entirely sure. Perhaps you can ask the village elders later.”

Recalling his conversation with the old doctor and looking at the villagers who showed him such genuine concern,

Lu Qing suddenly smiled and nodded earnestly. “Don’t worry, everyone. I will diligently learn medicine from Grandpa Chen.”

Bidding farewell to the villagers, Lu Qing took Xiaoyan’s hand and walked home, feeling very happy.

He felt a sense of relief.

Fortunately, he was reborn in his current village.

If he had been reborn in one of those less civilized villages the old doctor mentioned, he would have faced a host of troubles.

Although life is a bit hard now, there are not so many bad things.

What’s more, as he becomes more familiar with this world, he believes that even if it is life, it will get better and better.

After returning home, Lu Qing asked Xiaoyan to play by herself, and he took out the “Bai Cao Jing” and continued to read.

After knowing the value of the Red Moon Carp, he became less anxious to find a way to make money.

After Doctor Chen helps to sell the Red Moon Carp, he will have a sum of money, which is enough for him and Xiaoyan to live for a while.

What he values most now is the test of the old doctor.

As long as he passes the test, he can formally study medicine with the old doctor, and he must seize this opportunity.

Therefore, even with the help of supernatural powers, he has memorized the entire “Bai Cao Jing”.

Lu Qing remained unperturbed, diligently studying the contents.

Time slipped by as Lu Qing read.

Villagers came by, seeking advice on fishing. After all, the two large fish he had caught yesterday were still quite impressive.   Some wanted to learn

from him .   But when they saw Lu Qing reading in the yard, they didn’t dare disturb him and quietly left.   For dinner, Lu Qing cooked fish again, along with a handful of blanched wild vegetables from the yard.   After dinner, it was already dark. Lu Qing read for a while longer, and then it was completely dark.   Since they couldn’t afford an oil lamp at home, he put the book away as soon as it got dark.   However, after an afternoon of review, his familiarity with the “Bai Cao Jing” had deepened.   Aside from a few words whose meanings he still struggled with, he had few remaining doubts.   After all, the “Bai Cao Jing” was simply a book about herbs, a popular medical text, not a comprehensive medical text. It wasn’t difficult to understand.   Not to mention Lu Qing’s supernatural powers.   He believed that even if Old Doctor Chen were to test him right now, he would definitely pass.   After putting away his books, Lu Qing prepared to coax Xiaoyan to bed.   This other world wasn’t like the glittering world of his previous life, where the nightlife didn’t begin until the early morning.   Here, 10 p.m. was considered late.   Most people went to bed around 8 or 9 after dark.   ”Brother, Xiaoyan isn’t sleepy yet?”   the little girl lay in bed, tucked under a small blanket.   Moonlight streamed through the window onto the bed, revealing her round eyes.   ”Xiaoyan, be good, go to bed early. We have to go to Grandpa Chen’s tomorrow,” Lu Qing coaxed.   ”But Xiaoyan can’t sleep.” The little girl was being naughty.   ”What should I do then?” Lu Qing was a little dumbfounded. ”   Brother, tell me a story. Xiaoyan still wants to hear the story of the little monkey from last time!” The little girl stated her purpose.   ”Okay,” Lu Qing sighed. “Where did we leave off last time?”   He felt a flicker of regret.   Two nights ago, Xiaoyan woke up in the middle of the night and cried non-stop,   no matter how he tried to soothe her. Finally, he had to tell her a story, and surprisingly, the little one was hooked.   ”Last time, we talked about the little monkey who wanted to be king!” Xiaoyan remembered it clearly.   ”Okay, so one day, a group of monkeys were playing in a mountain stream and accidentally discovered a water curtain cave…”   Yes, Lu Qing was telling the story of the Monkey King.   However, he hadn’t read the original story carefully in his previous life, so he didn’t remember the details of the story very clearly.   He could only rely on his memory and form his own words.   Fortunately, the story of the Monkey King is infinitely fascinating to children.   Even though he had cut off the beginning and the end and omitted many details, Xiaoyan still listened with rapt attention.   However, she was a child after all, and she fell asleep quickly. Coupled with the calming effect of the Green Turtle Stone,   Xiaoyan didn’t even hear the little monkey officially become king before her eyelids fluttered and she fell into a deep sleep.   Lu Qing gently tucked her in and prepared to return to his own bed.   Suddenly, I heard a noise coming from outside.   (End of this chapter)
