Chapter 26 Test, Happiness (Please read it again on Tuesday)

“What?”

Lu Qing looked at the old doctor in surprise, wondering if he had heard it wrong.

“Grandpa Chen, you just said that you wanted me to learn medicine from you?”

“Why, you don’t want to?” asked the old doctor.

“No, but Grandpa Chen, didn’t you say that you just wanted me to stay with you and learn some herbal medicine knowledge?”

“I’ve changed my mind. What Mr. Wang said earlier reminded me that the village really needs a doctor in the future.”

“As the only literate person in the village, maybe I should give you this opportunity.”

Mr. Wang, the old man who patted Lu Qing on the shoulder and asked him to learn medicine from Mr. Chen.

Lu Qing was stunned.

He thought it would take a long time before he could get the opportunity to study medicine.

Unexpectedly, things took a turn for the better so soon.

He was delighted and was about to thank him.

Doctor Chen added, “But don’t be too happy too soon. Learning medicine requires qualifications. Without them, even if I’m willing to teach you, you might not be able to learn.”

“What does it take to be qualified?” Lu Qing asked.

“One month,” the doctor said. “If you can memorize the names and properties of all the herbs in the ‘Bai Cao Jing’ within a month, I’ll officially take you on as my apprentice.”

“If you can’t, then you’d better stay put, learn some herbal knowledge, and make a living as an herbalist.”

“Grandpa Chen, I will definitely work hard to memorize the entire ‘Bai Cao Jing’!”

Lu Qing said excitedly.

It was just memorizing the ‘Bai Cao Jing’, right? He could do it right now.

However, Lu Qing knew that if he actually recited the entire ‘Bai Cao Jing’ in front of the old doctor,

he might not be met with surprise, but fear.

So he couldn’t rush this matter; he needed to give the old doctor time to accept it.

After all, he had previously told others that he only knew a few characters, not a thorough reader.

Next, Lu Qing took the “Bai Cao Jing” and asked Doctor Chen some questions about it.

Primarily, he asked about rare characters and the pronunciation of medicinal herb names.

Although his supernatural powers had helped him memorize the entire “Bai Cao Jing,”

he still wanted to understand the meanings of some characters more deeply. He

also wanted to verify any differences with his own understanding.

The old doctor, naturally, explained everything he knew, meticulously explaining everything to Lu Qing.

It was during these discussions that the old doctor was astonished to discover Lu Qing’s exceptional memory.

He only needed to explain many characters once or twice, and he had already memorized them without further explanation.

“Lu Qing, you truly are a very intelligent child,” the old doctor said with great satisfaction.

Lu Qing’s performance far exceeded his expectations.

At this rate, perhaps he could truly memorize the entire “Bai Cao Jing” within a month.

“Grandpa Chen, you taught me well,” Lu Qing said modestly. He

breathed a sigh of relief.

It was the first time he realized that feigning ignorance was exhausting.

He clearly understood many things, yet he still had to ask questions several times, and he couldn’t let the old doctor see any flaws.

This was a huge test of his acting skills.

“Okay, that’s all for today. It’s not advisable to learn too many characters at once, or you’ll easily get them mixed up. Take this ‘Bai Cao Jing’ back and study it carefully tonight. Come up tomorrow and I’ll test your progress.”

“Grandpa Chen, don’t I have to wait until my next acupuncture session?” Lu Qing was surprised.

“You’re almost learning the ‘Bai Cao Jing’, so why wait so long? After three days, I’m afraid you’ll forget everything you learned today!” the old doctor scolded with a smile.

“Then we’ll come up tomorrow to greet you,” Lu Qing said happily.

“Grandpa Chen, does that mean Xiaoyan can come up and play with you tomorrow?” Xiaoyan also said happily.

“Of course, grandpa will make you some new cakes tomorrow for you to try.” The old doctor picked up the little guy.

Xiaoyan’s eyes lit up: “Are the new cakes as delicious as the yam cakes?”

“They won’t be worse than the yam cakes.”

The little fellow immediately felt his mouth water.

After leaving the courtyard halfway up the mountain with Xiaoyan, Lu Qing’s heart was still filled with joy.

His harvest today was once again enormous.

He had intended to give the Red Moon Carp to the old doctor, but he hadn’t expected it to be such a rare and precious fish.

After the old doctor sold the Red Moon Carp, after deducting the money he owed the doctor for the medicine, he should still have some silver left.

He was very poor right now, and with the silver, many urgent matters could be solved.

More importantly, he knew that the Red Moon Carp liked to eat blood apricots.

If the river outside the village could produce one Red Moon Carp, there must be others.

As long as he was patient, he might be able to catch more.

Then, it would be another fortune.

Besides the Red Moon Carp, the greatest reward was the opportunity given by Old Doctor Chen.

Next, as long as he followed the steps, read the “Bai Cao Jing” thoroughly, and gained the old doctor’s approval, he would truly have the opportunity to study medicine.

Lu Qing believed that, possessing special abilities, he would surely master medicine if he diligently studied.

Furthermore, the ability he had suddenly discovered today had made Lu Qing realize that

his abilities were even more powerful than he had imagined, with many more waiting to be discovered.

Excited, the brother and sister headed home.

Meanwhile, news of what had transpired at the old doctor’s house was spreading throughout the village.

In particular, the news that Lu Qing was studying medicine with the old doctor had captured the attention of nearly every villager.

Beneath a large tree in the center of the village, a group of villagers were discussing the matter.

“Do you think Lu Qing is really studying medicine with Old Doctor Chen?” a villager asked in surprise.

“Of course it’s true. We all saw it with our own eyes. Lu Qing was reciting a medical book!” a villager replied.

“That’s right, and when we asked Lu Qing, the old doctor didn’t deny it. So, isn’t that true?” another villager said.

“So, our village will have a doctor someday?” an elderly man asked excitedly.

“It’s still early. Lu Qing is only learning from the old doctor. It’s unclear when he’ll be able to start treating patients.”

“No matter what, it’s still a hope. If the village doesn’t have a doctor, we’ll all be back to the old ways.”

Hearing this, the villagers fell silent.

Before the old doctor arrived, they had to endure any illness on their own.

Some minor ailments might heal if they endured,

but they were afraid that if they continued to endure, they would develop into something bigger.

Many people in the village had died that way.

After the arrival of Old Doctor Chen, life became easier for everyone.

No matter what the ailment, Old Doctor could treat it. Even if he couldn’t immediately, he could ease the pain and make the patient feel less miserable.

Most importantly, his fees were affordable.

Even if someone couldn’t pay, he would still help, allowing them to temporarily owe him money.

Where else could you find such a good doctor?

That’s why everyone held Old Doctor Chen in high esteem.

But everyone also knows that the old doctor is very old.

So sometimes they can’t help but think about what they will do if the old doctor is gone one day.

No one wants to go back to the days when they were sick but had no doctor to see.

Now everyone is really happy to hear that Lu Qing is learning medicine from the old doctor.

Just as everyone was chatting under the tree, suddenly, someone shouted,

“Lu Qing is back!”
