I Can See Through Everything - Chapter 25

Chapter 25 The Merits of the Old Doctor
In the end, Old Zhao was carried away by his two sons, his wife scolding him.
Doctor Chen gave him acupuncture and prescribed some medicine, and by the time Old Zhao returned, his complexion had improved considerably.
With Old Zhao and his family gone, the villagers had no more fun to watch, and not wanting to disturb Doctor Chen any longer, they all prepared to disperse.
“Ah Qing, are you leaving?” Wang Da’an asked Lu Qing.
“Hey, Lu Qing, why are you here? And Xiaoyan, too?”
Only then did the other villagers notice Lu Qing and Xiaoyan standing in the corner.
“I’ve been here the whole time, but everyone was just concerned about Uncle Zhao’s health and didn’t notice me,” Lu Qing said with a smile. “Brother Da’an, you two should go back first. I have something to ask Grandpa Chen.”
“Ask?” Wang Da’an then noticed the book in Lu Qing’s hand and suddenly realized, “Are you here learning something from Old Doctor Chen?”
“Yes, I’m learning some herbal medicine from Grandpa Chen,” Lu Qing didn’t deny.
The villagers were surprised by this statement.
How could Lu Qing be so highly regarded by the old doctor?
After the surprise, envy followed.
The old doctor’s medical skills were well-known to all, and he could even bring back the dying.
Many people had seen Lu Qing before, and he was cured by the old doctor with just one medicine.
Earlier, when Old Zhao fell into the water, his face was said to be ashen and he was no longer breathing.
Then, with a few massages, the old doctor revived him.
It’s no exaggeration to say that his medical skills could bring the dead back to life.
Now that Lu Qing had the good fortune to study medicine under the old doctor, how could they not envy him?
But despite their envy, the villagers knew that such a thing was unattainable.
Learning medicine was obviously not easy; if one wasn’t very bright, they wouldn’t even be able to get started.
Didn’t you see Lu Qing holding a book? The number of words that everyone in their village knew combined wouldn’t even fill a basket.
Only Lu Qing, who had been taught by his grandfather since childhood, could recognize a few words.
Perhaps this was why Old Doctor Chen valued Lu Qing so highly.
Thinking of this, the jealousy of many villagers subsided a little,
for they knew that even if such a good thing happened to them, they wouldn’t be able to take it.
An older villager stepped forward and patted Lu Qing on the shoulder.
“Well done, Lu Qing! You must study medicine diligently with the old doctor and strive to learn all his skills!”
The sudden encouragement left Lu Qing a little bewildered.
He wanted to say that he was really just learning some herbal medicine knowledge from Dr. Chen.
But seeing the old doctor’s eager eyes, he could only nod and say, “I’ll try my best.”
Even after the villagers had left, Lu Qing remained somewhat bewildered.
He had assumed that everyone would be envious of him studying medicine with the old doctor.
But he had just seen it.
The villagers were envious and jealous, but not as intensely as he had imagined.
On the contrary, alongside their envy and jealousy, they seemed to hope that he could truly master the old doctor’s skills.
Lu Qing did not like to make malicious assumptions about others.
But he also knew that people’s hearts were unpredictable, and sometimes, jealousy came for no reason.
“Are you confused?” Doctor Chen came to Lu Qing.
“What?” Lu Qing was puzzled.
“I don’t understand why the people in the village want you to learn my medical skills so much?” Doctor Chen smiled.
Lu Qing nodded. He really didn’t understand.
Could it be that the old doctor knew the reason?
“Lu Qing, do you know how many doctors there were in the nearby villages when I settled in this village?”
The old doctor did not directly answer Lu Qing’s question, but asked instead.
Lu Qing shook his head.
When the old doctor came to the village, the original owner was still young and did not have many memories of this.
“There is not even one.” The old doctor gave an answer that surprised Lu Qing. “Before I came to the village, there was not even a doctor in the nearby villages.”
“When villagers are sick, for minor illnesses, they basically just pick some herbs they know and boil them to drink, or go to the midwife or witch to get some medicine. For the rest, they basically just endure the pain. Only when they can’t endure it anymore will they go to the city to seek medical treatment.”
“But most of the serious illnesses in the world evolve from minor illnesses. By the time they can’t endure it anymore and go to the city to seek medical treatment, it is often a serious illness.”
“Serious illnesses are difficult to treat. Even doctors in the city are not sure they can cure every disease.”
“Besides, living in the city is not easy, let alone seeking medical treatment.”
“Even if doctors in the city can definitely treat it, the high medical fees are not something ordinary villagers can afford.”
“Therefore, for ordinary villagers, serious illness often means the end of their life.”
“Before I arrived, the surrounding villages were seeing a significant number of deaths from illness each year.”
Lu Qing thought back, recalling that, before the old doctor arrived, there had indeed been annual funerals in the village.
“When I traveled here, I saw many people in the nearby villages suffering from illnesses and lacking access to medical care. Unable to bear the pain, I stopped here, hoping to offer these villagers a glimmer of hope.”
“I didn’t expect that I’d stay for ten years.”
“In these ten years, I can’t say I’ve saved countless lives, but at least I’ve helped the villagers here find a place to seek medical care when they fall ill, preventing minor illnesses from escalating into serious ones.”
Lu Qing was deeply moved.
According to the old doctor, he had truly been a living Buddha, ensuring peace and security in the area for the past ten years.
“Is that why everyone wants me to study medicine with you, so I can treat patients in the future?” Lu Qing asked.
“Yes, I guess everyone’s tired of living without medical care,” the old doctor nodded.
“Don’t we still have Grandpa Chen?”
“But I’m very old,” the old doctor said.
“Although I rarely walk around the village, I still occasionally hear people whispering about what would happen if I suddenly died one day, and where they’d go if they were sick.”
Lu Qing: “…”
He thought of the old doctor’s status as a cultivator.
Those criticizing villagers certainly couldn’t have imagined that an elderly man could have such keen hearing.
Now Lu Qing finally understood why, despite envy and jealousy, everyone still urged him to study hard when he saw him studying medicine with the old doctor.
It turned out that they were afraid of the days before without a doctor. They
feared that if the old doctor was gone, they would return to their old ways.
“Grandpa Chen, are you angry?” Lu Qing asked.
“Why should I be angry?” the old doctor chuckled. “It’s just human nature. Besides, I’m really old, half buried in the ground.
But I see you’re in good health, “
Lu Qing thought to himself.
He recalled the red glow he had seen emanating from the old doctor.
“Lu Qing, you’re a smart kid. Now you should understand what everyone meant, right?”
“I understand a little bit.” Lu Qing nodded.
“So, would you like to study medicine with me?”
the old doctor suddenly asked.
