Chapter 16297. Squad

Upon hearing Lu Yong’s words, Chen Xian simply nodded without saying anything more. The two then fell silent, quietly meditating.

Half an hour passed quickly. They appeared again, this time flying forward for about an hour before landing on a small hill. From that hill, they could clearly see a market town not far away. The market town was built on another small hill, and its area wasn’t very large. It

was now dark, and the market town had an illusion array. This array wasn’t for preventing cultivators, but rather for preventing ordinary people from entering. The main defensive array wasn’t visible at the market town now, but everyone knew that there was actually a defensive array beneath it. However, the market town’s defensive array wasn’t very strong; it primarily served as an early warning system.

There are far too many markets like this in the Divine Kingdom. This alone reveals the sheer number of independent cultivators within its borders. The population of the Divine Kingdom is composed of, of course, ordinary people. These people possess little combat power and have only cultivated the lowest levels of techniques. However, these techniques offer no benefit other than increasing their strength and improving their physical condition. Therefore, they are content to remain ordinary. This group constitutes the majority, and their exact number is difficult to say, but it is likely in the hundreds of billions.

Does this mean that there are no geniuses among these ordinary people? Yes, of course. Geniuses among ordinary people generally have four destinations. First, when they are young, sects will test them. If a true genius is discovered, they may be recruited into the sect as disciples, and their families will also be brought into the sect. Second, their villages are under the jurisdiction of aristocratic families, who will also test them. If a truly talented disciple is found, they will be recruited and nurtured from a young age. Once they develop their talents, they will become disciples of the aristocratic family, and some may even become retainers.

Third, the Divine Kingdom will test them. If a truly talented child is found, they will be gathered together and either join the army or enter the Divine Kingdom’s academy as disciples. Later, they may become low-ranking officials in the Divine Kingdom, and with good luck, they may even establish their own small family.

Fourth, some people possess talent, surpassing that of ordinary people, but they don’t meet the standards for joining sects, aristocratic families, or even the Divine Kingdom. Unwilling to remain ordinary, they become rogue cultivators. Rogue cultivators constitute the second largest population group in the Divine Kingdom. Their exact number is uncertain; some say hundreds of billions, others tens of billions, but the number is vast.

Above rogue cultivators are disciples of sects and aristocratic families, also numerous. Many of these disciples only reach the power level or throne level at most. Above them are the imperial carriage level and palace level; these individuals are the backbone of their respective sects, the core strength. Above them are the sect’s true masters, but their numbers are very small.

Because of the large number of independent cultivators, there are many markets in the Divine Kingdom. Of course, most markets don’t have powerful figures stationed there. In general, it’s already quite remarkable if a market has even one expert at the Imperial Chariot level. Many markets are staffed entirely by Throne-level cultivators. Such cultivators are considered experts among independent cultivators. Take Lu Yong, for example; he has cultivated his entire life and is still only a Force-level cultivator, with no possibility of breaking through to the Throne level. Don’t be fooled

by the fact that Throne-level disciples are considered low-ranking disciples in various sects. Among independent cultivators, they represent one in a thousand, or even one in ten thousand, of true experts. After all, the cultivation techniques practiced by independent cultivators are generally inferior, and the cultivation resources they obtain are far too scarce.

If someone like Lu Yong were to receive proper training from a sect, he would definitely be more than just a cultivator at the “Power Level.” He might already be a cultivator at the “Royal Chariot Level,” or even reach the “Royal Palace Level.” After all, Lu Yong is a cultivator with three attributes; with proper training, his strength would be formidable.

Market towns are typically built on mountains or in remote, secluded places to isolate ordinary people. Cultivators and ordinary people are best kept separate, because if cultivators engage in conflict, even if an ordinary person is struck by that power, they will either die or be seriously injured. This is unless a powerful force establishes rules preventing cultivators from arbitrarily engaging in conflict, like the cultivators in the city. Because of the laws of the Divine Kingdom, even if there are cultivators in the city, they dare not cause conflict. That’s why ordinary people dare to live in the city. Without the laws of the Divine Kingdom, ordinary people wouldn’t dare to live in the city either.

Market towns are generally divided into inner and outer sections, separated by a wall. The inner section is the area within the wall, while the outer section is the area outside.

A single wall offers very limited defensive capabilities, especially against cultivators. Even a rogue cultivator can fly, and walls are typically not very high, at most around three zhang (approximately 10 meters), which is considered tall. Such walls are simply insufficient to stop cultivators. Furthermore, places like markets are unlikely to have any anti-flying formations. Setting up such a formation would require far too many spirit stones; no sect would bother setting up such a formation in a market town. Therefore, the walls in market towns offer virtually no defensive capability.

However, the ward wall acts as a boundary. Inside the boundary is the market town, which belongs to that sect’s territory. Outside the ward wall is the outer area, and that sect has no jurisdiction over the situation outside the market town. In other words, the area inside the ward wall is governed by the sect’s rules, while the area outside is not, much like a place where there are laws but no laws.

The market town that Lu Yong and his group are about to attack doesn’t have a very large area inside the ward wall, but outside the wall, there are many houses. These houses are not planned at all; they were all built by people themselves, so they look crooked, dilapidated, and sewage-filled.

However, Lu Yong and his group don’t find anything wrong with this situation. In fact, almost all the markets in the Divine Kingdom are like this. The inside and outside of the market town are like two different worlds. Inside the market town, the streets are clean, the shops and houses are all planned, the streets are straight, and the environment is very pleasant.

Outside the market town lay a slum overflowing with sewage. There were virtually no laws here, but it wasn’t entirely without rules. In fact, this area did have some regulations, but these weren’t set by any sect or divine kingdom; they were set by various gangs.

That’s right, there were gangs in the slums outside the market town. They were essentially groups of independent cultivators banding together, forming various factions. These gangs would squeeze every last drop of profit from ordinary cultivators, and veteran cultivators like Lu Yong had seen this far too often; they were used to it.

Now, Lu Yong and his companions stood atop another mountain, looking at the market town. Their faces were filled with a sense of nostalgia. Many of them had lived in such markets before, only recently escaping such an environment after joining the Myriad Laws Divine Sect and moving into its territory. Now, they were here to attack this place, and their feelings were complex.

At this moment, the elder who had led them there said in a deep voice, “Everyone, get ready. In half an hour, we will attack that market. This is a market of the Silver Fir Sect. There are five Throne-level cultivators from the Silver Fir Sect stationed here, along with fifty Power-level cultivators as guards. Apart from them, there isn’t much defense here. Our mission this time is to eliminate the people of the Silver Fir Sect. We must not touch anyone else. After we start, no one is allowed to rob the shops. If I find out, they will be punished according to the sect rules.” Everyone was visibly alarmed and immediately responded.

The elder spoke, “When we attack, the defensive array in this market will activate. You don’t need to worry about it; I’ll break it. Our target is the Silver Fir Sect’s guards. Remember, show no mercy to them; kill them all. If anyone else in the market dares to interfere, do the same; kill them all. Also, once inside the market, remember to shout, ‘Don’t interfere in sect feuds!’ If anyone listens and still tries to interfere, kill them all.” Everyone

responded. The elder then said, “Alright, rest for a bit. We’ll attack again in half an hour on my command.” Everyone responded, and then he… They all found places to sit down and quietly meditated. Soon, everyone was ready. Seeing that everyone was calm, the elder stood up and said, “Let’s talk about the attack. We have a total of 240 people. This market has four gates. We will divide into four teams and attack the market from four directions. Each team will have a captain. I will now appoint four captains. During the attack, everyone in each team must obey their captain.”

Everyone responded again. The elder then said, “Captain of Team One, Lu Yong.”

Lu Yong really hadn’t expected to be called first. He quickly stood up and responded. The elder nodded and then said, “You choose sixty people; these people will be in your team.”
