Chapter 15982. The Blue Wolf Gang

Wu Lingfeng has been here for five days and has settled in. He had been to the Qingmu Sect before, but only for a mission and hadn’t stayed long. Although he knew a little about the place, he didn’t know much. In the past few days, as a rogue cultivator, he had carefully observed the situation and found that the rogue cultivators here were doing quite well.

The Qingmu Sect is a small sect. They don’t have any special products, but that’s not entirely true. They produce a type of talisman paper called Qingmu paper. This paper is quite good for talismans, but it’s not anything special. It’s just that the production volume is relatively large, but the price is very cheap. Because of this, the people in the Qingmu Sect are doing quite well, even the rogue cultivators. The Qingmu Sect needs a type of tree called Qingyang tree to make paper. This tree grows very quickly, usually several meters tall in a year, and its wood is relatively soft, making it an essential material for making Qingmu paper.

Many of the rogue cultivators here actually work by cutting down trees. Of course, because these trees are relatively easy to cut, the wages aren’t high, but at least they can make a living.

The Green Wood Sect hasn’t been attacked by the Flame Pirate Gang, so the cultivators here are doing quite well. Wu Lingfeng has been observing these rogue cultivators for the past few days. He discovered that they have secretly formed small teams. There are some open and covert struggles between these teams, but they are all well-controlled and haven’t caused any major trouble.

Seeing this, Wu Lingfeng had an idea. If he could join a small team, wouldn’t his identity be less suspicious? With this in mind, Wu Lingfeng began to observe those small teams. His strength was among the top in those teams, but he used his cultivation technique to hide it. He couldn’t let anyone know his current strength, otherwise it would arouse suspicion. It was precisely because of his strength that the rogue cultivators didn’t notice him when he observed them.

Wu Lingfeng quickly selected a small team, a newly formed group currently recruiting. Their main task was logging. The reason they formed this team was because they had been bullied by another group while logging; those guys stole their felled trees, and they couldn’t fight back. Outraged, they formed this small group—essentially, to band together for mutual support and deter others from easily attacking them.

Wu Lingfeng chose this team because its members seemed relatively honest. After observing them for a few days, Wu Lingfeng found the team rather loosely organized. They usually worked independently, only revealing their team name when trouble arose. Their team had a rather interesting name: the Green Wolf Gang. It sounded imposing, but they deliberately chose it to intimidate others.

After observing for a few days, Wu Lingfeng decided to contact the Green Wolf Gang to see if there was a chance to join their team. So he waited and waited until evening when the Green Wolf Gang returned to their settlement. As they were about to go to eat, Wu Lingfeng approached them.

The members of the Green Wolf Gang were chatting and laughing as they walked towards their courtyard. They had rented a large courtyard where they all lived, which made them look like a gang. When they suddenly saw someone blocking their way, they were startled and then became alert. The leader, a burly man who looked to be in his forties, looked at Wu Lingfeng and asked, “Who are you? What do you want?”

Wu Lingfeng quickly clasped his hands in a fist salute and said, “Please don’t misunderstand, everyone. My name is Wu Feng. I’m a rogue cultivator who hasn’t been here long. I heard it’s relatively easy to get by here, so I came. I’ve been observing the situation here these past few days and have learned about the Green Wolf Gang. I’ve come to find you all because I hope to join the Green Wolf Gang. You can rest assured, I haven’t offended anyone before and I don’t have any enemies. I really just want to find a place to work peacefully. I hope you can give me a chance.” After speaking, Wu Lingfeng bowed to them again.

Upon hearing Wu Lingfeng’s words, the men were taken aback. The burly leader looked at Wu Lingfeng and then asked, “You want to join us? Why?”

Wu Lingfeng replied, “These past few days I’ve been observing the gangs here, and I’ve noticed that only you guys haven’t bullied anyone else. I don’t want to cause trouble; I just want to work and eat peacefully, but I don’t want to be bullied either. So I want to join you. Please grant my request.”

The burly man was somewhat surprised by Wu Lingfeng’s words. He looked at Wu Lingfeng and said, “I didn’t see that coming. You’re quite observant. Okay, it’s settled then. You can join us and start working with us tomorrow.” “But it’s agreed that we need to observe you for a month. After a month, if there are no problems, you will officially join us. This month is our observation period. What do you think? Do you agree?”

Wu Lingfeng immediately nodded and said, “I agree, of course I agree. I’ll come find you all tomorrow.”

The burly man asked, “Where do you live now?”

Wu Lingfeng replied, “I rented a small house in Dingchou District, and I’m living there now.”

The burly man nodded and said, “Okay, then you go back first and come find us tomorrow morning to work with us.” Wu Lingfeng responded, clasped his hands in a fist salute to everyone, and then turned and left.

After Wu Lingfeng left, the burly man spoke up, “Li Tong, go follow him, but don’t let him see you. See if what he said is true.” A young man, not very old and with a clever look on his face, responded and then turned to leave. The burly man glanced at the others and then said, “We do need to recruit people. If he’s alright, keep him. Observe him closely these days.” Everyone responded and then went directly into their courtyard to prepare for their meal.

Although these people were independent cultivators, they did not consume fasting pills. The main reason for this was that fasting pills were too expensive. Fasting pills might not be a big deal for sect disciples, but they were too expensive for independent cultivators. What they ate was not spiritual food, but ordinary ingredients, which were much cheaper. One fasting pill could buy over a hundred kilograms of grain, plus some meat. That’s why they still needed to eat regular food, and very few people would consume fasting pills.

Wu Lingfeng had noticed someone following him, but he didn’t care. He went straight back to his small house and rested. To avoid being exposed, he had rented a very ordinary little house, so no one would suspect his identity.

Li Tong watched Wu Lingfeng enter the room and waited outside for a while. When Wu Lingfeng didn’t come out, he returned to the courtyard and went directly to the burly man.

The burly man was Huo Lei, the leader of the Green Wolf Gang. He was a body cultivator who had reached the power level. He was the one who initially proposed the formation of the Green Wolf Gang, so he naturally became the leader.

When Huo Lei saw Li Tong return, he asked, “How was it?”

Li Tong replied, “Brother Huo, that man wasn’t lying. He really is staying in the Dingchou District. He went back to his room to rest and hasn’t come out since.”

Huo Lei nodded and said, “Good, let’s go eat. We still have a month. We can observe him slowly and carefully.” Li Tong agreed and turned to eat.

Huo Lei wasn’t worried that Wu Lingfeng was sent by another gang to deal with him. Small gangs like theirs, only concerned with self-preservation, wouldn’t be dealt with using such complicated methods. There was no need; without such a large benefit, no one would resort to such tactics.

Huo Lei’s concern was that Wu Lingfeng had offended someone and joined them to escape being hunted down. If that were the case, and Wu Lingfeng’s enemies came looking for him, they would be in trouble, possibly even becoming collateral damage. That’s why he had Li Tong accompany Wu Lingfeng.

The next morning, Wu Lingfeng arrived at the compound early. The people there were already up and eating breakfast. They only ate two meals a day, spending the rest of their time working.

Wu Lingfeng knocked on the door, which was opened from the inside. It was Li Tong who opened it. As soon as Li Tong saw Wu Lingfeng, he nodded and said, “You’ve come? Come in.” Wu Lingfeng responded and walked into the courtyard.

Everyone in the courtyard was eating, each holding a large bowl. The meal was very simple: a large bowl of mixed grain rice topped with some vegetables, which appeared to be mostly wild greens, but it was quite oily and looked very greasy.

Huo Lei also saw Wu Lingfeng. He nodded to him, swallowed his food, and then asked, “Have you eaten?”

Wu Lingfeng quickly replied, “I’ve already eaten.”

Huo Lei nodded and said, “Good, wait a moment while we finish eating, then we’ll set off.” Wu Lingfeng responded and found a stone to sit on in the courtyard.

Huo Lei and the others finished their meal quickly. Afterward, Huo Lei stood up and went to Wu Lingfeng. Wu Lingfeng quickly stood up as well. Huo Lei asked, “Do you have any suitable tools?” Wu Lingfeng

immediately understood what Huo Lei meant. He wasn’t referring to a flying sword; no one would use a flying sword to chop down a tree. Huo Lei was probably asking about an axe. Wu Lingfeng

immediately nodded and said, “Yes.” With a flick of his hand, an axe appeared in his hand. It was a large axe, the kind used for chopping trees. This was one of the things the old man who ran the general store had recommended to Wu Lingfeng. Sometimes, an axe was even more useful than a flying sword in the wild. It could be used as a weapon and a tool, so many independent cultivators would carry an axe, even if they didn’t use it regularly, so they wouldn’t be awkward when they needed it. That’s why Wu Lingfeng had this axe. (End of Chapter)
