Chapter 15981: The Rogue Cultivator

Wu Lingfeng returned to his room, his expression quite strange. He truly hadn’t expected their mission to be like this: to infiltrate other sects and rogue cultivators to gather intelligence on the Flame Pirate Gang. If that were all, there wouldn’t be any real danger.

But the problem was, his strength had already reached the Royal Chariot level, and how many rogue cultivators were at that level? It was hard to say. Thinking of this, Wu Lingfeng couldn’t help but smile bitterly. He truly hadn’t expected that increasing his strength would turn into a bad thing.

Shaking his head, Wu Lingfeng sighed. He had no choice but to accept this mission, whether he liked it or not. He began packing his things. He hadn’t been staying in this room long, and there wasn’t much to pack. He quickly finished, glanced around the room, and prepared to leave.

They’ve already received their mission, and the sect has told them they must leave within three days, no matter which sect they go to. If they’re still there after three days, they’ll be punished. To avoid punishment, Wu Lingfeng plans to leave today.

After packing his things, he glanced at his clothes and headed outside. Once outside, he went straight to the area where rogue cultivators lived. Every sect has an area for rogue cultivators; no matter how large the sect, there are always rogue cultivators. These rogue cultivators sometimes inject new vitality into the sect.

Wu Lingfeng arrived at the area where the rogue cultivators lived. He observed that their clothing was distinctly different from his own. While his clothes were already considered poor within the Qingyang Sect, the rogue cultivators’ clothes were even worse. Some weren’t even robes, just ordinary clothes. Most of these clothes were gray, and some, though supposedly robes, had patches on them. Judging by the location of the patches, these clothes might not have originally belonged to any one person; they might have been taken from a corpse. As for where that corpse came from, that was hard to say.

The rogue cultivators also looked at Wu Lingfeng, but there was no hostility in their eyes. They were all trying to make a living in the Qingyang Sect, and Wu Lingfeng was a disciple of the sect, so they naturally wouldn’t dare to be hostile towards him.

Wu Lingfeng walked slowly down the street. Soon, he saw a small, dilapidated general store. What attracted Wu Lingfeng to this store was a few pieces of old clothing displayed near the entrance.

Wu Lingfeng entered the general store. A somewhat aged voice called out, “What would you like, sir?”

Wu Lingfeng turned around and saw a man standing up behind a pile of miscellaneous items. The man looked to be eighty or ninety years old, wearing a tattered robe. His face was full of wrinkles, his hair was messy and completely white, and his eyes were cloudy. He gave off an air of impending death.

However, when the old man saw Wu Lingfeng, a hint of confusion flashed in his eyes, but he immediately asked, “What would you like, sir?”

He changed his address from “sir” to “guest” because Wu Lingfeng was wearing the uniform of the Qingyang Sect, clearly showing the old man’s respect for the sect members.

Wu Lingfeng glanced at the old man and then asked, “Are these clothes for sale?” He pointed to several old clothes placed near the door.

The old man glanced at the clothes Wu Lingfeng pointed to, even more puzzled. He said, “Yes, sir.”

Wu Lingfeng nodded, then glanced outside, then back at the old man, and said, “I’ll take them.” The old man was stunned. He looked closely at Wu Lingfeng and asked, “Does sir need anything else?”

Wu Lingfeng looked at the old man and said, “I also need some things commonly used by rogue cultivators. Not new, old is best. Also, I don’t want a third person to know about this.”

Upon hearing Wu Lingfeng’s words, the old man’s expression changed. He immediately said, “Yes, sir, please rest assured, I guarantee I won’t let anyone else know.”

After saying that, he began rummaging through the general store, and soon he brought out… He brought out a large pile of items, all old things, and placed them in front of Wu Lingfeng, saying, “These are things that rogue cultivators often use. This flying sword, I don’t know how many times it’s been used. Flying swords are a luxury for rogue cultivators; unless they’re completely broken, most people wouldn’t be willing to replace them. This is a leather rope; it’s very useful. Although it’s not a magic weapon, it can sometimes play an unexpected role. Most rogue cultivators have one. This is animal hide, also old. Most rogue cultivators have one like this. If you’re on a mission in the wild and can’t find a place to rest, this animal hide can be used as a blanket or a mattress; it’s very convenient…” The old man introduced each item to Wu Lingfeng and explained its uses.

This old man was a seasoned veteran; he knew very well that some things could be inquired about, and some things couldn’t. Some things he could know, and some things he had to forget even if he knew them. Obviously, some people knew that Wu Lingfeng had come to him to buy things, but he absolutely couldn’t say what Wu Lingfeng had bought there.

Wu Lingfeng listened quietly, and after the old man finished his introduction, he put all the items away and said, “I’ll take them all.”

The old man nodded and accepted the spirit stones Wu Lingfeng offered. These items weren’t worth much, and Wu Lingfeng had given too much, but he didn’t care. After giving the spirit stones, he left the general store. In his opinion, whether the old man would keep his secret or not was irrelevant. He was leaving anyway, and he might never see any of the rogue cultivators here again, so whether he kept it a secret or not didn’t matter.

After Wu Lingfeng left, a rogue cultivator entered and said to the old man, “Old Zhang, that was a high-ranking official from the Qingyang Sect. What’s he doing here?”

Old Zhang glanced at the man and said calmly, “He just wanted to ask me about someone. What else could he be doing here? Buying my stuff? Do we have anything here that would be of interest to those high-ranking officials?”

Upon hearing this, the man burst into laughter, “Old Zhang, with all this junk you have, let alone those high-ranking officials, I wouldn’t even look at it.” With that, he turned and left.

Old Zhang retreated back to his corner, sitting there quietly, as if awaiting his death.

Wu Lingfeng, however, immediately left the dwellings of the rogue cultivators and went to a nearby grove. Once inside, he quickly changed into an old rogue cultivator’s robe. After tidying himself up, he washed his face, messed up his hair, and then hunched over before emerging from the grove. At this moment, he looked like an ordinary rogue cultivator. Wu Lingfeng

glanced around and then slowly walked towards the teleportation array. He was heading towards the rogue cultivator teleportation array, a small array that could only accommodate up to fifty people simultaneously. Qingyang Sect disciples wouldn’t use this array; it was exclusively for rogue cultivators. This teleportation array was

built by the Qingyang Sect, and there were several disciples guarding it. Their job was actually to collect spirit stones and adjust the array. Normally, using this teleportation array cost one spirit stone per use.

Wu Lingfeng walked to the teleportation array and observed for a while. He noticed that when rogue cultivators used the teleportation array, they would go to the disciples guarding it, hand over a spirit stone, state the name of their sect, and then wait. A moment later, the teleportation array would flash, and the person would disappear.

Understanding this, Wu Lingfeng also went over. He took out a spirit stone and handed it to the disciple guarding the teleportation array, saying, “Jade Dragon Sect.” He had noticed that the previous rogue cultivator had gone to the Jade Dragon Sect, so Wu Lingfeng had given that name to avoid the other party needing to adjust the array.

After giving his name, he stood on the teleportation array and waited. The next moment, a flash of white light, and he disappeared from the teleportation array. When he reappeared, he was in another, smaller teleportation array.

He glanced around, then walked out of the teleportation array. This was clearly a gathering place for rogue cultivators, surrounded by them. Wu Lingfeng looked around again, then walked to the side into a grove of trees, changed his clothes and face once more, and returned to the teleportation array. He gave the name of a sect again, and then disappeared into the teleportation array once more.

This time, the name of the teleportation array Wu Lingfeng gave was Qingmu Sect. He had been to Qingmu Sect before when doing missions. It was a small sect with no special products, but there were many rogue cultivators there. Anyway, the sect didn’t stipulate where he had to lie low, so he came to Qingmu Sect. He had been here before, so he was at least somewhat familiar with it. Going to a completely unfamiliar sect would be very troublesome.

The settlement of rogue cultivators at the Qingmu Sect was much larger than that at the Qingyang Sect. He wandered around for a while, then found a small house and rented it. All the houses here were built by the Qingmu Sect members and were only for rent, not for sale. Naturally, the rent was very cheap—one spirit stone was enough for a month’s rent. So Wu Lingfeng rented the house directly.

After renting the house, he went to the settlement, found a small tavern, and sat down. He ordered a pot of wine and some side dishes, eating and drinking while listening to the conversations of the other people in the tavern. Now that he was a rogue cultivator, he needed to know what these rogue cultivators were talking about and gather useful information from them. He might be living here for a while, and he needed to understand the place; otherwise, he would suffer the consequences later. (End of Chapter)
