Chapter 15920. Mission

Upon returning to the Qinglan Sect, Chen Feng handed in his mission and then went straight back to his courtyard. As soon as he arrived, he went directly to the meditation room. If it weren’t for the god, he almost wouldn’t have made it back. He moved the cabinet aside, knelt down in front of the statue, and the next moment he arrived in that space.

Upon entering the space, the statue spoke, “My believer, I will give you a task. If you can complete this task well, I will give you a greater reward.”

This was the first time the statue had spoken like this, which startled Chen Feng. He immediately replied, “Almighty God, please give your command.”

The statue said, “You must develop more believers. The more believers you develop, the greater the reward you will receive. You performed very well this time, and I will reward you.” The next moment, Chen Feng emerged from the space. He immediately felt his body burning, and countless streams of spiritual energy entered his body, instantly boosting his strength. The burning sensation quickly disappeared, and Chen Feng breathed a sigh of relief, his eyes filled with joy.

He then kowtowed to the statue again before moving the cabinet back. After placing the cabinet, Chen Feng sat in the quiet room, pondering how to develop believers. Directly hiring people to do so would be difficult. How could he proceed?

Suddenly, Chen Feng had a thought. The god only told him to develop followers, but didn’t say that he had to develop outer disciples as followers. What if the followers he developed weren’t outer disciples, but ordinary people? Wouldn’t that be easier?

Thinking of this, Chen Feng immediately stood up and flew directly towards the management office. He remembered that the sect had some garrison missions. These garrison missions were very simple, just to stay in one place for a period of time. And such places were usually mines or herb gardens. These missions weren’t dangerous, of course, the rewards were also very low.

Chen Feng looked at the tasks and then chose one: to be stationed at a mine. Actually, there wasn’t much to do at the mine; it was just watching the miners work. Those miners were just ordinary people, working to earn a living. The reasons for their stationing were twofold: first, to prevent attacks from monsters or ghosts; and second, to prevent the miners from stealing from their homes. Of course, such things rarely happened. Therefore, being stationed at a mine was a low-paying and very strenuous job, and few people were willing to do it.

Some might say that if you were stationed at a mine, you could keep some ore for yourself, but that was almost impossible. First of all, the mines that these outer disciples were assigned to guard were all very ordinary mines, like iron ore. What use would you have for iron ore? Even if you manage to get tens of thousands of kilograms, you won’t sell it for more than a few spirit stones. If the sect finds out, you’ll be punished, and you won’t have anywhere to sell it anyway. You’ll have to sell the ore back to the sect, but they buy it all at a very low price. And when you try to sell it, you’ll be checked. If they find out you stole the sect’s ore, punishment is inevitable. So they have almost no chance to make a profit, making it a truly arduous task.

However, for Chen Feng, hardship wasn’t important. What mattered was that he could spread his teachings and develop followers, so Chen Feng decided to go there to preach.

After accepting the mission to guard the mine, Chen Feng returned to his small courtyard, took the statue, and went directly to the mine. The mine was quite a distance from the main hall; it took Chen Feng more than a day to fly there.

It was an iron mine in the mountains. The mine had a large mine shaft with some houses outside, including a small, rather formal-looking building.

Chen Feng landed directly at the small building. As soon as he arrived, a man emerged from it. This man, dressed in the robes of a Qinglan Sect disciple, looked delighted and asked Chen Feng, “Senior Brother, are you here to guard this place?”

Chen Feng nodded, “Yes,” his attitude still arrogant.

The disciple, however, didn’t seem to care and said to Chen Feng, “Senior Brother, please come in. Tell me about the situation here.” He then led Chen Feng into the building with unexpected enthusiasm.

Chen Feng followed him into the building, which was the disciple’s residence. Upon entering the first floor, there was a room resembling an office, furnished with a desk, a chair, and several stools—it looked quite ordinary and simple.

The disciple led Chen Feng to the desk, then took out an account book and a spatial bag and gave them to Chen Feng. He then said to Chen Feng, “Senior brother, please take a look. This is the account book, and this spatial bag contains the ore. The sect will send someone to come once a month to take away the mined ore. Senior brother, please check and see if the numbers are correct.”

Chen Feng nodded, picked up the ledger, and looked at it. He found that the ledger was very simple, merely recording the amount of iron ore mined each day and then giving a total. The latest record for the month was also written in it, showing a total of 23,000 jin of ore mined. Chen Feng then picked up his spatial bag and looked inside. Sure enough, there was a pile of ore. He took out a piece of ore, weighed it in his hand, estimated its weight, and after confirming that the weight was correct, he nodded to the disciple and said, “The ledger is correct.

” The disciple nodded and said, “That’s good. I’ll pack up and then leave. Before I go, there’s something I need to tell you, Senior Brother. Although this is a mine, there’s no profit to be made here. The miners won’t steal ore because there’s nowhere to sell it. They know exactly how much ore they can extract each day. There are only a little over a hundred miners here, and among them, there are ten foremen. These ten foremen will report to us once a day, recording how much ore each person has mined, and then report back to me.” “Here, we just need to keep accounts. There’s nothing else to do. You don’t need to do anything either. Just keep these records. As long as the accounts match, the sect generally won’t interfere. However, there’s one thing I must make clear to you, Senior Brother: if you ever want to leave, you must report to the sect in advance. You can only leave after the sect finds a successor. Otherwise, you’ll have to stay here until the sect finds a successor. But because no one in the sect wants to guard the mine, it’s very difficult to find a successor. I heard the longest it took was over a year. I reported it three months ago, and you’re only taking over now. If you want to leave, then report in advance.”

Chen Feng nodded, and the man went upstairs. He quickly came down, nodded to Chen Feng, and said, “Then, Senior Brother, I’ll be going now.” After saying that, he walked out of the small building without looking back and flew away, as if he didn’t want to stay here for even a minute longer.

Chen Feng, seeing his expression, didn’t say anything. He carefully explored the small building. It had only two floors: a study, an office, and a living room on the first floor, and his bedroom and meditation room on the second. The building was quite spacious, constructed entirely of stone, and appeared very sturdy.

Chen Feng was satisfied with the building’s condition. He then walked out, having not seen anyone there before, wanting to check if it was deserted.

Outside, he saw many low stone houses, all quite ordinary and unremarkable. After checking, he found them empty. He then slowly made his way into the mine.

The mine was located on the mountainside. From a distance, the entrance appeared large, but upon closer inspection, it was even larger than he had imagined. The entrance was about ten zhang high and fifteen zhang wide, semi-circular in shape, and dark inside.

Chen Feng entered the mine. Upon entering, he found the area much larger and the ground quite flat. The walls were covered with signs of excavation. Ten stone tables were set up inside, each with a chair behind it, and a person sitting in each chair. However, they were all asleep, making the place very quiet.

Chen Feng glanced at the ten people; they all seemed quite old. Each stone table also had a notebook and a pen on it.

Chen Feng looked at the ten men and knew they must be in charge. He coughed lightly, his voice soft but clear enough to reach their ears. The ten sleeping men were immediately startled awake. They looked up, somewhat dazed, and upon seeing Chen Feng, they were all taken aback. Then they all stood up and bowed to Chen Feng, saying, “Greetings, Master.”

Chen Feng nodded and said, “I am the new garrison commander. If you need anything in the future, you can come to me.” The ten men all responded. Chen Feng didn’t say anything more, turned, and left the mine. He didn’t want to go deeper into the mine; there was no need. He decided to just go back to the small building and wait.

After returning to the small building, he first settled the statue, and then began his cultivation. He cultivated until nightfall. Later that evening, a commotion arose from the mine. Chen Feng stood up, walked to the window of the small building, and looked towards the mine. He saw people emerging from the mine. These people were all dressed in coarse, tattered clothes, each carrying an iron pickaxe and a large bamboo basket on their backs. They chatted and laughed as they walked out of the mine.

Soon, the people returned to the stone huts, then came out to fetch water to wash themselves, and some gathered to chat.

When no one else came out of the mine, the ten foremen emerged and walked straight towards the small building. Seeing them approaching, Chen Feng went downstairs and waited for them in his office. He wasn’t familiar with the mine’s operations, so he planned to observe the procedures for a few days to adapt before proceeding with his plans.
